Set to launch some time in 2028, The Witcher IV has cemented itself as one of the most anticipated games of all time. Despite The Witcher video game franchise kicking off back in 2007, it was only in 2015, with the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, that the series’ popularity kicked off in earnest, with the game now being regarded as one of the greatest of all time.
Loosely based off books by author Andrzej Sapkowski, the series has become a household name thanks to the video game series by CD Projekt RED, and in recent years, Netflix has jumped on the bandwagon with a live-action television series.
As such, there has never been a better time to be a Witcher fan, especially as fans can expect the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s third and final DLC some time next year, and of course, The Witcher IV will continue the story in 2028, with Ciri taking over as our protagonist.
With The Witcher IV still at the crux of development, it makes sense that not much is known about the highly anticipated sequel. Whilst we may have received a glimpse of the gameplay, and the stunning world which will reportedly be set in Kovir and Poviss, we have not yet had official confirmation on the map’s size.
The map in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was estimated to be around 135 to 142 square kilometers (roughly 52 to 55 square miles), and according to one update, the map for the sequel will be roughly the same size.
According to CDPR game director Sebastian Kalemba, The Witcher IV said, “The map is definitely more or less when it comes to size, the amount of quests, more or less the same. Again, the game is going to be big. But also, the ambition of the entire team is huge. So first and foremost, we want to deliver a super compelling experience.”
“Again, quality over quantity. But definitely, what we can promise: yes, this game is going to be pretty big. It’s going to be big compared to everything we’ve prepared so far…” Kalemba added.
Additionally, with The Witcher VI expected to introduce new regions, at least according to CDPR executive producer Gosia Mitręga, it seems as though the sequel will be bigger and better than previous installments.
Following the news of the suspected map size, fans took to r/witcher to share their thoughts, with one user commenting, “Honestly? That’s good. It allows the studio to put more effort into designing each location instead of just making it bigger just to be “better” than the previous game.”
Another user agreed, adding, “I don’t have a problem with that at all. Witcher 3‘s map was a very good size without being too overwhelming. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, and seeing how they said they want side quests to be more involved and engaging, I think that leaves less room for filler.”
So it seems as though CD Projekt RED might be on the right track when it comes to The Witcher IV‘s open-world map. However, with still some time to go until we get our hands on the highly anticipated sequel, we can only hope that our hype will be warranted.
