Borderlands 4 launches in less than three weeks, and Gearbox has already revealed plenty of details. The game will continue the franchise’s tale, leaving behind Pandora for the war-torn planet of Kairos.

The title will follow four new Vault Hunters, officially introduced during the April State of Play. It will have even more guns and loot than previous franchise entries, and preview videos and trailers have even hinted at the return of several familiar faces.

In short, we know a lot about Borderlands 4 and what it’s going to look like when it launches on September 12. But there’s still one very important question that I can’t wait to find the answer to: What song will start the game?

The Starting Song Establishes The Game’s Tone

Borderlands fans know and love the title for its ridiculous action, overabundance of weapons, quirky characters, and unique style and setting. Aside from those highlights, every Borderlands game has also started with an awesome musical piece.

The songs that accompany the opening cinematic of each Borderlands game are every bit as iconic as the games themselves. The tradition was started by the very first title, which led in with Cage the Elephant’s Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked, a catchy, alt-rock tune that perfectly encapsulated the tone and feel of the game.

Subsequent games have continued the trend with bangers of their own. Some of the most iconic song pairings include Short Change Hero by The Heavy for Borderlands 2, Retrograde by James Blake for Tales from the Borderlands 5 (yes, each chapter in the spinoff also had its own starting song), and Black Dragon by The Vines for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

Since every single Borderlands game has started with a grungy alternative rock hit, it stands to reason that the fourth mainline game will, too. It may seem trivial, but the opening song and cinematic set the stage for the rest of the game. So far, each song has perfectly fit the feel and setting of each game and its opening cutscene, so I’m excited to find out which song will accompany the start of BL4.

The next game takes place on a new planet, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the musical choice also expands to a new style. But I’m also expecting it to have more of the same catchiness as the other games. And, whatever the lead song will be, I’m sure it’ll match the feel and vibe of Borderlands 4.
