A new open-world RPG that boasts the Western style of Red Dead Redemption is set to release later this week, and fans of Rockstar’s cowboy adventure may want to keep this title on their radars. The release of Red Dead Redemption back in 2010, followed by the second entry in the series in 2018, set new standards for the genre and inspired tons of games. A new dark fantasy RPG is inspired by Red Dead Redemption and Bloodborne, for example, and it’s set to arrive in 2027.
Now, a new title inspired by Rockstar’s franchise is arriving, promising a more grounded Old West gameplay experience. The title will be released in Early Access on Steam starting on May 29. According to the developers, the new game should remain in Early Access for a large portion of 2026, but could still be released this year. However, depending on the feedback that is received and the work that needs to be put in, the game could be pushed back into 2027.
The game in question is called Frontier Legends. Developed and published by Neojac Entertainment Inc., this is a new open-world RPG set in the Wild West. The game mixes survival, crafting, and exploration into a package, so fans of games within that genre may feel familiar with its mechanics. The new survival RPG on Steam is like Red Dead Redemption, both in terms of setting and how grounded it is.
Unlike some other games that draw on fantasy inspirations, Frontier Legends on Steam is a bit more based on reality. You’ll start off building your camp and gradually upgrading it into a settlement, which will grow more and more. As it does, you’ll also be tasked with leading the community and fending off threats, be they natural or human. You are free to live your Western adventure the way you desire, as a hunter, a trader, a bandit, or whatever else best suits you.
It is worth noting that, while it is in its Early Access period, the game is still technically in development, meaning that the developers are actively working on both expanding its content and fixing any issues that may arise. The game will be paid and, therefore, is not free-to-play, though it will be cheaper in Early Access compared to its final version. Those who purchase the survival Western game on Steam in Early Access will have access to the final version of the game for free.
Based on what it intends to be and the promotional material shown so far, there is a lot of potential for Frontier Legends as players wait for the imminent Red Dead Redemption 3. Surely, there are huge differences between the two franchises, but this new Western RPG may be worth checking out, especially if you’re a fan of Red Dead Redemption.
