Despite being released all the way back in 1992, Batman: The Animated Series is still one of the most fondly remembered adaptations of The Caped Crusader to this day. With a classic art style, incredible storylines, and some of the best-written characters Batman has ever faced off against, it’s no wonder fans are clamoring over the series’ surprise return in the form of an officially licensed comeback for The Animated Series.
Even if it’s not another direct adaptation of the beloved series, fans are already celebrating the series’ return in Batman‘s latest release, especially since it’s a great way to pass the time while we wait for the upcoming Batman: The Brave and the Bold film from the DCU. As noted by DiscussingFilm on X, there’s a surprise on the way for fans.
Not only will the upcoming release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight include content from across the entire Batman franchise, but it also recreates the entire opening of Batman: The Animated Series within the LEGO games engine.
While it would have been easy to simply replicate a few shots from the classic cinematic, Legacy of The Dark Knight is even more faithful when it comes to perfectly recreating the style, framing, and even the theme song of the original opening within an in-game cutscene. As if the nod wasn’t exciting enough on its own, the cinematic also raises hope that we’ll get even more content from the show incorporated into playable levels.
Even if we have to wait and see how many characters or storylines will get adapted from The Animated Series into the upcoming release of LEGO Batman, it’s already off to an incredibly promising start, with an expansive map that’s chock-full of content and references to uncover.
Although some fans were slightly disappointed by Legacy of The Dark Knight adding Robin to the end of the cinematic, rather than replicating Batman‘s iconic rooftop solo pose, it’s an easy change to overlook when it comes to appreciating the homage to one of the original shows that solidified the Capes Crusader’s wide range of storytelling potential, which will likely be expanded even further in the upcoming game.
Given that the full release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight will have a plethora of iconic costumes and characters pulled from all across the series, it has the perfect chance to approach classic narratives from the shows, comics, or other games in an entirely new light, while focusing once again on the beloved vigilante.
