One of the most complex shows in Netflix‘s sci-fi catalog is all set to return in 2026, and it is hard not to see how it will only get better in its next installment. When it comes to science fiction, Netflix seems to have a diverse set of offerings. While it includes mainstream crowd-pleasing shows like Stranger Things that riff on familiar tropes and devices, it also offers multi-layered and mind-bending dramas like Dark.
3 Body Problem, which is based on Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, falls in the latter category. Although the show is not as convoluted as Dark after one season, it is far more narratively dense and high-concept than the regular fare of sci-fi shows. Created by Game of Thrones‘ showrunners, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, along with Alexander Woo, the show boasts an impressive 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite being adapted by the creative powerhouses behind Game of Thrones and having solid source material, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is yet to garner the same level of acclaim and appreciation as Netflix’s most mainstream offerings of the sci-fi genre. From the looks of it, though, 3 Body Problem will achieve exactly that in its upcoming season.
3 Body Problem Is Set Up For A Much Bigger Second Season
As reports suggest, 3 Body Problem season 2‘s runtime has been cut down to six episodes. Its shorter runtime is likely the consequence of the growing production budget per minute. While the shorter runtime is concerning in more ways than one, 3 Body Problem is expected to get a lot bigger and better in terms of the scale and scope of its storytelling.
After the show’s premiere and early success, Netflix renewed it for two more seasons. This left enough room for the Netflix sci-fi show to adapt the remaining two novels from the original trilogy. Owing to this, 3 Body Problem season 2 will seemingly move into Cixin Liu’s second book, The Dark Forest, which explores the overarching narrative in a whole new direction.
What begins as a present-day story in season 1 leaps centuries into the future as humanity prepares for the San-Ti invasion. Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik has also hopped on-board for the show’s season 2 to bring some massive visuals from the books to the screen.
Viewers who have read the books would already be anticipating how the show will portray the iconic “Droplet” scene and The Dark Forest‘s large-scale space fleet operations.
Given how the episode number counter has been dropped to six in season 2, it seems like Netflix is heavily investing in the show’s VFX. These spells promise for the series since the epic scale of the books cannot be captured without a big budget. The Netflix sci-fi show’s roster, too, seems even more promising, as names like Claudia Doumit (The Boys) and Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) have joined its cast.
With so much going in 3 Body Problem‘s favor in season 2, it is hard not to believe its upcoming installment will significantly improve the overarching story. If all goes well, 3 Body Problem will likely get even better in season 3.
3 Body Problem Has Already Avoided One Big Problem Most Second Seasons Suffer From
In the streaming era, many sci-fi shows remain aimless about when they will end their runs. Their fate is usually determined by their commercial success. While some shows still manage to make the best out of their uncertain futures, many end up feeling incomplete and rushed towards their final chapters. Stranger Things was recently a victim of this and even Game of Thrones suffered from the same issue in season 8.
Fortunately, for 3 Body Problem, it has no reason to expand its story beyond three seasons. Netflix has already greenlit it for two more installments, allowing it to adapt the full scale of the story from its source material. This ensures that 3 Body Problem gets a conclusive and well-rounded ending and even gives creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss enough room to pave the way for a satisfying ending.
David Benioff and D. B. Weiss’ also seem to thrive as showrunners when they have a clear and complete source material in hand. Game of Thrones showed signs of slowing down when it drifted away from the books in season 5. Its flaws became more and more evident the more it tried to adopt an original story.
Since Cixin Liu’s original trilogy is complete, Netflix‘s 3 Body Problem allows the creators to leverage their strengths and deliver a well-rounded and conclusive adaptation.
