It’s Official, Love Island USA Season 8 Is Already Making The Same Mistakes As Last Year

Love Island USA season 8 is just getting started, but after a massive cast reveal, it appears the Peacock hit is repeating the same mistakes that had viewers threatening to quit the series last season. As Love Island USA season 8 gets started, the series is only beginning to introduce viewers to this year’s group of Islanders. With a mix of people from all walks of life, Love Island USA typically lets viewers in slowly as they introduce the Islanders to one another and begin introducing twists to the competition. Despite backlash after last season, Love Island USA seems prepared.

While Love Island USA has become a summertime staple over the past few years, the show hasn’t been short of missteps surrounding its casting choices. Last season, one Islander was ejected after just a few days in the villa, while another was discovered to have made racially insensitive remarks in the past, which led to her ejection from the show late in the season. Love Island USA season 8 viewers are looking for change in terms of careful casting, but they may be sorely disappointed this year after seeing the first group of Islanders who will be entering the villa.

The first season 8 Islanders include the daughter of an NBA player, a US Paralympian, and a face that may be familiar to the audience. While the Peacock series has been quick to bring connected cast members into the series, Love Island USA season 8 is already making familiar mistakes.

Love Island USA Season 8 Introduced Its Cast, Including Charlie Georgiou’s Brother

When the cast for Love Island USA season 8 dropped with a familiar face, viewers’ reactions surrounding the addition of Zach Georgiou were mixed. The brother of Love Island USA season 7 star Charlie Georgiou, who was dumped from the villa on day 11 after an intense-but-brief relationship with Hannah Fields, Zach was the only cast member who had apparent ties with anyone from the Love Island franchise. Throughout Love Island USA’s run, there’s been an interesting thread in the show’s casting decisions. While they aren’t always straight-up nepotism, they make it clear that there are specific casting avenues explored.

Zach joining the cast may mark one of the first times that Love Island USA has brought a sibling into the mix for a season, but after seeing Charlie on the series last season, it may not have been the right move. While Charlie was only in the villa for a little over a week, he didn’t make as much of a mark on Love Island USA as he likely anticipated. Throughout his time on the show, many critiqued Charlie for being a bit boring and failing to make active decisions in the villa, which doesn’t bode well for Zach.

After casting was criticized consistently on Love Island USA season 7, it was clear the series needed to make some major changes moving forward. Many wondered if Love Island USA season 8 would happen, but now that it’s around the corner, it’s clear that the series is going to be moving in a similar fashion to previous seasons. While it’s been reported that there will be new rules surrounding the social media monitoring of the cast members while they’re away, the casting of the show paints a far bigger issue that Love Island USA has been guilty of for years.

While Zach himself isn’t an inherent issue, Love Island USA appears to be casting through their existing connections, whether that be previous cast members or within the wider NBC Universal network. While it’s always been expected that Love Island USA cast members were “real”, or pulled from more realistic settings, in the past few seasons cast members have consistently been models, entertainers, and people who are already involved in the entertainment industry in some way.

Rather than pulling from pools of hopefuls who believe they could get the most out of the Love Island USA experience, the series appears to be using their own connections to build a cast that may not satisfy the wider fanbase.
