Kara Zor-El’s DC Universe story will be significantly different from David Corenswet’s Superman movie.
In a new Empire interview, Milly Alcock opened up about the Supergirl film’s overall premise, as the Australian star elaborated on the massive differences between her and 2025’s Superman. The House of the Dragon alum stated, “I understood at that point that James is trying to do something very different and unexpected with her. She’s such a good contrast to Superman, because she’s a survivor of trauma in the purest sense. I was excited to play someone so beautifully flawed and resilient.” Hey, if you lost your entire planet and people, you’d probably be messed-up too.
Supergirl director Craig Gillespie also shared how Kara’s trauma was an essential anchor to the 2026 installment. He praised the screenplay’s direction, adding how, “I have a very specific tone I’m attracted to. I always loved the first Iron Man: flawed, complex and conflicted. They sent me the Ana Nogueira script [for Supergirl], and two scenes in, I was like, ‘I’m in.’ It was exactly what I hoped for; it’s all character. She went from an incredibly, incredibly dark scene to this irreverent character scene, all in the first 15 pages.”
The I,Tonya and Cruella filmmaker promises that “[Supergirl] has got a lot of trauma, a lot of demons; she’s unapologetic. You get to have a character that can be punky and edgy and not take off those rough edges.” Alcock made her DCU Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” debut in Gunn’s 2025 entry, where Kara made a cameo that sets up her 2026 story.
While Clark Kent had to deal with shocking revelations about his Kryptonian family, Kara witnessed their home planet die in front of her, which is a significantly different trauma from Kal-El’s situation. One reason the DC heroine is drinking as much as she is is that she witnessed Krypton’s destruction.
2026 won’t be the last time the audience sees Krypton’s last daughter, as Alcock is already working on her next DCU appearance. She is officially part of the Man of Tomorrow cast, as Gunn’s Superman continuation is currently filming.
This will bring the two Kryptonian cousins together on the big screen for the third year in a row, as Corenswet will appear in the Supergirl movie this summer. Whether or not Alcock’s solo film will pave the way for their Man of Tomorrow reunion remains to be seen.
The Supergirl movie is slated to open in theaters on June 26, and Alcock will be back as the Girl of Steel in Man of Tomorrow on July 9, 2027.
