Michael Keaton’s $880M Sci-Fi Fantasy Smash Hit Officially Releases On Netflix Next Week

Michael Keaton will soon have a whole new crowd discovering one of his biggest box office successes.

From being one of the most beloved actors to have ever played Batman to his legacy as Beetlejuice, Keaton’s many movie roles have become some of the most remembered ones in Hollywood. While the actor continues to stay busy with new projects, a massive sci-fi fantasy film with the star is switching platforms this summer.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting ready for one of its biggest releases this year, Spider-Man: Homecoming is heading to a massive streaming platform. The 2017 film, which brought Keaton back to the superhero genre, will officially be available on Netflix starting on July 1.

Focusing on Tom Holland’s adventures as Peter Parker after Captain America: Civil War, the Phase 3 entry sees him go up against Keaton’s Vulture, marking Adrian Toomes’ live-action debut. In Peter’s first MCU solo film, the iconic Marvel foe is reimagined as a former business owner who goes rogue after the Department of Damage Control forces his company to fall apart.

The Holland-and-Keaton-starring installment became a massive box office hit, as it grossed over $880 million worldwide. As of writing, its Rotten Tomatoes and audience scores remain solid at 92% and 87%, respectively.

Even though the former Batman star joined the MCU timeline, there was a time when he was almost in Spider-Man: Homecoming at all. After being in talks for the role, Keaton had to actually pass on the superhero adventure due to filming conflicts with The Founder. However, thanks to schedules getting retooled, he was able to sign on for the project by May 2016.

Are you an Avenger — or just a friendly neighborhood bystander?

While he hasn’t been back as Vulture in the MCU after 2017, the Academy Award-nominated icon did reprise the role in a different Sony-Marvel project through Morbius. Through the impact of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Adrian got sent from Earth-616 to Earth-688, which is the designation for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Even though it was never explained why Doctor Strange’s spell transported Vulture there, audience members saw the Spidey foe joining forces with Jared Leto’s Morbius in the box office bomb. As he proposed to Michael that they form a team, this was seemingly hinting at a Sinister Six setup, which to this day has not come to fruition.

Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Netflix move is coming at the perfect time, as it will be exactly 30 days until Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in theaters, which will bring Holland’s web-slinger back after being absent from the franchise for five years. This is the ideal timing for audience members who want to revisit Spider-Man’s MCU timeline by reexploring his original trilogy.

While Adrian may not be in the Phase 6 entry, Keaton has his own major project coming up in just a few months with The Whisper Man. Based on Alex North’s novel of the same name, the Netflix adaptation will see him play Frank Carter, alongside Robert De Niro as Detective Inspector Pete Willis, Michelle Monaghan as Detective Amanda Beck, and Adam Scott as Tom Kennedy, when it premieres on August 28 on the streamer.

Catch Spider-Man: Homecoming streaming on Netflix in the United States starting on July 1.
