Brand New Day Suit Officially Pays Homage To Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is donning a fresh Spidey suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but it’s also one that calls back to past cinematic Web-Slingers.

As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Holland’s Peter meeting Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the same character. Together, they were able to cure Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Lizard, and Electro of their various conditions, then return them to their respective universes. Now it’s been officially confirmed that following No Way Home, Holland’s Peter, a.k.a. Peter-One, took inspiration from his older variants, a.k.a. Peter-Two and Peter-Three, for his new suit.

In a video shared by Sony Pictures Releasing UK, the actor recalled how when it was decided to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, they came up with the idea to have Peter-One’s suit be an homage to Peter-Two and Peter-Three’s now-classic costumes. Holland described the Brand New Day suit as a “Spider-child of all three costumes,” adding that they went back to “that dumpster driver kid who’s retro-fitting old tech.” Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of the upcoming Marvel movie, also had the following to say:

So the result of that is the suit that I think is beautiful in its simplicity. The suit does have a bit of a tactile feel to it. We are embracing the folds and the wrinkles. When it moves, it’s actually material, and you can see the human beneath the material.

At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland’s Peter asked Doctor Strange to erase everyone’s memory of him in order to save the multiverse. As a result, he lost the Stark Industries made available to him by Happy Hogan, requiring him to revert to a back-to-basics approach to crime fighting. That included Peter stitching together a new costume, which he hadn’t done since prior to meeting Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War.

That costume’s design resembled the earliest Spider-Man comics written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Steve Ditko, but with Spider-Man: Brand New Day taking place four years after No Way Home, Peter-One has since shifted to a blend of what Peter-One and Peter-Two wore. However, that’s not the only way Holland’s Peter will resemble one of his predecessors. The movie sees him going through a physical transformation that enables him to shoot organic webs, just like Maguire’s Peter can do.

Holland is joined in Spider-Man: Brand New Day by returning Spider-Man film series cast members Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal will reprise Hulk and The Punisher, respectively, as well. The lineup of newcomers includes Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Eman Esfandi, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and Justin Kuritzkes wrote the movie’s script.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31. The entirety of the Spider-Man film franchise can also be streamed on Disney+, as well as Holland’s appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. An animated variant of this version of Peter is also the subject of the animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which is expected to air season 2 sometime later this year.
