James Trafford on Villa radar

Aston Villa are weighing up an ambitious move to sign James Trafford from Manchester City this summer, with the highly rated young goalkeeper emerging as a potential long-term successor to Emiliano Martínez.

Villa’s interest comes at a time of growing uncertainty surrounding Martínez’s future. The World Cup winner has been linked with a move to Manchester United, and while no deal is imminent, the speculation has prompted Villa to begin planning for a possible transition in goal.

Trafford, valued at around 35 million GBP, is seen as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in England. Despite limited first-team opportunities at Manchester City, his reputation has continued to grow thanks to standout performances at youth level and during previous loan spells. Calm under pressure and confident with the ball at his feet, Trafford fits the profile of a modern goalkeeper capable of thriving in a possession-based system.

At just 23, Trafford represents both a short-term option and a long-term investment. Villa are understood to admire his composure, shot-stopping ability, and distribution, all of which align with the demands of top-level Premier League football. His ability to play out from the back would be particularly valuable for a Villa side that has increasingly looked to control matches through structured build-up play.

The proposed 35 million GBP fee reflects both his potential and the premium placed on young English talent. While it would be a significant outlay, Villa view it as a strategic move to secure a key position for years to come, especially if Martínez departs.

For Manchester City, the decision could hinge on Trafford’s pathway to regular football. With competition for places at the Etihad remaining intense, a permanent move may appeal to both player and club if it offers him the chance to establish himself as a number one.

Should Martínez leave and Trafford arrive, Villa would be placing their trust in youth, but also in a goalkeeper widely regarded as ready to take the next step. It would mark the beginning of a new era between the posts at Villa Park.
