Kelsey Grammer trades the warmth of Frasier for a much darker tale in Turbulence, a psychological thriller set aboard a hot air balloon. Written by Andy Mayson (who previously produced Kenny Dalglish and Sweetness) and directed by Claudio Fäh (Sniper: Reloaded and Sniper: Ultimate Kill), the movie begins with a romantic trip before devolving into a nightmare.

Zach (Jeremy Irvine, Outlander: Blood of my Blood) and Emmy (Hera Hilmar, See) find their hot air balloon trip interrupted by a figure from Zach’s past, but the secrets that interloper carries with them are only the start of a battle for survival in the sky. Grammer plays Harry in the film, and Olga Kurylenko (Thunderbolts*) rounds out the cast as Julia.

A Closer Look At The New Turbulence Poster

Turbulence draws from the breathtaking natural beauty of its setting to heighten the impact of its story, which juxtaposes the adventure every person longs for with the fear of misadventure that could befall them. The director himself recently compared the film to classics like Philip Noyce’s Dead Calm and Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water, as well as the recent hit Fall, which also featured a pair of nature-loving characters in dire circumstances.

Both the already released still images and the movie trailer highlight the tension palpable in the cramped balloon, trapped amidst the vast sky. Grammer is also not the only actor best known for a very different style of work, as Irvine has recently been winning the hearts of Outlander fans playing Claire’s father in the romantic prequel. Now, he is on an adventure in the air rather than back in time, but the danger is just as present. While the fates of Zach and Emmy are currently unknown, one thing is for sure: Turbulence will have its audience and characters alike bracing for impact.
