Former cricketer puts Ajit Agarkar on the spot after Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s dream run in IPL 2026

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a breeding ground for generational talent, but what transpired during the 2026 season has completely rewritten the history books. At just 15 years old, Rajasthan Royals‘ prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi completed arguably the most dominant individual campaign in the history of T20 cricket. Amassing a staggering 776 runs at an eye-watering strike rate of 237.30, including a record-shattering 72 sixes, the teenage phenom has left the cricketing fraternity completely spellbound.

As Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrated their consecutive title victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the biggest talking point off the pitch centered around when this young left-handed dynamic batter will transition into the national setup. His dream run has sparked an intense nationwide debate, directly placing India’s chief selector under immense pressure to fast-track the prodigy.

Former cricketer questions Ajit Agarkar over Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s selection following sensational IPL 2026 campaign

That is precisely the question former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja put to Ajit Agarkar on the sidelines of the IPL final. The two ex-India teammates appeared to catch up at Narendra Modi Stadium, and, by Jadeja’s own admission, he made sure his views on Suryavanshi reached Agarkar loud and clear.

How much better can he perform? I saw the chairman and asked him ‘Mr. Chairman! When will you pick Vaibhav Suryavanshi? If not now, then when? Irrespective of his age, how could anyone possibly bat better than this?

Surprisingly, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who was also in attendance at the final, was asked the same question by a group of reporters. His response may well be the strongest hint yet that the board is considering handing Suryavanshi his India debut sooner rather than later. Saikia noted that the young prodigy possesses a brilliant future and assured that the BCCI will exhaust all avenues to elevate him to the absolute pinnacle of international cricket.

While Agarkar had previously maintained that the teenager would be eased into the setup through India A tours to manage his development, the sheer volume of runs and unparalleled hitting efficiency in IPL 2026 makes keeping him out of the senior national squad an increasingly difficult task for the selection committee.
