The First Avenger is finally opening up about his return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Disney took the spotlight on Thursday for CinemaCon 2026, as ScreenRant was in attendance for the presentation, where Avengers: Doomsday became one of the big highlights at the Las Vegas event. Kevin Feige and the directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, were joined by both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, with the former Captain America finally speaking out about coming back to the franchise as Steve Rogers.
Following the reveal in December 2025 through one of the first Avengers: Doomsday teasers that Steve would be back in the film, Evans said at CinemaCon, “I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday, there’s a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers.” The MCU veteran also had a quippy response about Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, saying, “I don’t like him.” In the Avengers: Doomsday trailer that was shown at CinemaCon, Steve ends up reunited with Thor.
Reports about Evans’ return in Avengers: Doomsday first emerged all the way back in December 2024, long before the Phase 6 installment had started principal photography. However, the actor continued to deny that he had any involvement with the ensemble film, saying in an interview in January 2025, “That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it… Yeah, no—happily retired!”
The actor continued to deny it when speaking to ScreenRant’s own Liam Crowley, stating, “I mean, it’s sad to be away. It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.” But as many MCU audience members are used to by now, actors are constantly having to lie if they are involved with a Marvel Studios project before the higher-ups are ready to make it official.
With Evans back in the MCU timeline, one of the big aspects of his return in Avengers: Doomsday is how it was confirmed that he and Peggy Carter ended up having a son. While she wasn’t seen in the December 2025 teaser, Hayley Atwell is reportedly also back in the film, as it was first reported by Deadline in December 2024.
The Avengers: Doomsday cast will see crossovers between the iconic team, as well as The Fantastic Four, and Fox’s X-Men. It’s unclear at this point whether Evans is set to have any involvement with Avengers: Secret Wars, which will be the final film for Phase 6 and The Multiverse Saga, as production is set to start this summer.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is officially slated to open on December 18.
