Warning! Spoilers for Scrubs season 10, episode 9, ahead! The Scrubs season 10 finale officially establishes a replacement for the original series’ most memorable villain, and, in doing so, all but confirms that season 11 is on the way. This is a somewhat shocking outcome, since revival series that actually live up to their legacy are few and far between. Scrubs defied the odds with season 10, which holds an impressive 89% critic score and even more impressive 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Add in the record-breaking viewership of the revival’s premiere episode, and it seems pretty likely that ABC will give the greenlight.
It’s clear from the Scrubs season 10 finale that showrunner Aseem Batra and creator Bill Lawrence expect season 11 to happen. This episode certainly wraps things up in a satisfying enough way that we could all walk away relatively happy if that renewal never arrives. Still, there are several intriguing story threads left hanging. Among them is the maintenance situation at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The Scrubs revival waited until its very last episode to bring back Neil Flynn’s Janitor, the man JD was always so at odds with in the original show. Up to this point in the new series, we only saw Sacred Heart’s new custodian, played by comedian and content creator Darcy Michael. JD got along with this character just fine, but that changes as the Janitor officially passes the torch, establishing a brand new feud for Scrubs‘ next episodes.
What Sacred Heart’s Janitor Development Means For Scrubs Season 11
The Scrubs revival did an excellent job matching the tone of the original series. It didn’t feel like it was trying too hard, and the nostalgia felt completely natural and organic. The vast majority of JD’s relationships felt just as we remember them, though evolved enough that it’s believable that 17 years have gone by. The only thing that was really missing was that iconic, years-long feud with Sacred Heart’s Janitor. JD had Dr. Park to contend with, but it just wasn’t the same.
By reintroducing this dynamic at the very end of Scrubs season 10, it’s as if the medical comedy stuck its toe in the door just before it closed. It wasn’t just a fun cameo from Flynn or a comical reveal that Michael’s character is somehow the Janitor’s son—it was a promise that the Scrubs revival will be even more Scrubs-like in the very near future. The finale might as well have ended with a big sign that said, “Don’t worry, folks, we’ll be back.”
So, what will this actually look like in Scrubs season 11? It’s difficult to say if Flynn will be an ongoing presence in the series or whether he will come and go like Judy Reyes’ Carla and John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox. Regardless, the passing of the torch to Michael’s new Janitor guarantees that this comedian will have a consistent, antagonistic place in season 11. He’s sure to treat JD in much the same way as his predecessor did, and with the connection to and blessing from Flynn’s character, we can more easily enjoy the dynamic for seasons to come.
Just How Long Can Scrubs Realistically Keep It Up?
The Janitor twist emphasizes that the Scrubs revival’s first season was something of a stepping stone. These nine episodes were used to get the characters and audiences back into the groove, and the return of a custodial enemy at Sacred Heart marked the official launching point into the series’ full return. Scrubs season 11 will now have all the ingredients necessary to keep the show going for however long audiences are willing to watch.
The very design of Scrubs‘ story is limitless. The medical field is an ever-changing landscape of hardships, so every passing year brings new opportunities to the comedy show. Zach Braff and Lawrence have teased a potential five-season arc, and that certainly sounds realistic. Regardless, a time will eventually arrive when it becomes necessary to bring JD’s story to an end (for good this time), and that will likely be determined by declining viewership. For now, it’s pretty clear that Scrubs is only just getting (re)started. Once that season 11 renewal comes through, we can all lock in.
