Argentina U20 international Echeverri joins up with Man City

Argentina under-20 international Claudio Echeverri has joined up with Manchester City, having remained on loan at River Plate after sealing his Premier League move last year.

City clinched a £12.5million move for the midfielder in January 2024, but he was loaned back to the Argentinian club to get regular minutes.

Echeverri has starred for Argentina at the South American Under-20s Championship in recent weeks, with the Albiceleste finishing as runners-up to Brazil.

After scoring six goals in nine appearances at that tournament, he has now joined up with Pep Guardiola’s City squad for the first time.

The 19-year-old is eligible to appear for City in the Premier League and FA Cup, and he arrives with plenty of first-team experience after making 48 appearances for River Plate.

Speaking to City’s media channels, Echeverri revealed he had spoken to fellow Argentine Sergio Aguero before agreeing his move to the Etihad Stadium.

“I’ve spoken to Aguero, I knew about it [the relationship between Argentina and Manchester City]. Aguero, in particular, stands out,” Echeverri said.

“He’s a legend here at Manchester City because of everything he achieved and the incredible player he was.”

Echeverri added that Guardiola’s style of play was a key factor in his decision to choose City, saying: “Football has been my life, and my dream was to play for one of the best teams in Europe.

“Today I am closer to that dream. Manchester City are one of the best teams in the world. Not only do they win trophies, they play the game so beautifully.

“They are an example to everyone – they show people how to play football the best way.”
