Why Repo! The Genetic Opera Couldn’t Be Made Today Explained By Director

Darren Lynn Bousman has seen a big change in the movie business since 2008.

Having proven his value as a director on three of the first four Saw movies, Bousman in that year of 2008 set his sights on a project with much less commercial appeal than those torture porn classics, but with much more personal meaning. Repo! The Genetic Opera, a gothic rock opera in the vein of Rocky Horror Picture Show, was indeed not a hit, grossing just $188,000 in limited release, but did gain a cult following. Now receiving a brand new 4K theatrical re-release, Repo! is the kind of film that couldn’t even get made in today’s Hollywood, at least according to its mastermind.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender, Repo! director Bousman details the obstacles that would prevent such a commercially suspect and strange film getting the go-ahead 2026. “You’ve got to make sure you’re appealing to an audience prior to making the movie because you want to make sure it’s a financial success,” he said of the current climate. “With Repo!, we were just allowed to be creative and be artistic. And it’s a rarity now. It really is.”

Bousman expresses astonishment that he and his cast and crew were left alone as much as they were, even back in 2008. “Going back and looking, there is something like 64 hours of behind-the-scenes footage that’s never been seen…After looking at some of it, the fact that we were able to get away with and do half the s–t that we did just makes me f–king happy. I don’t know if that would happen today because everyone is so risk-averse.”

All that freedom yielded a film that ScreenRant has called “the goriest musical ever.” Bousman believes Repo! is also the film that most bears his personal stamp. “What was so great about this movie, as an artist, is that it’s the most me version of a movie that I’ve done on the screen. Meaning that I think the producers and financiers didn’t really know what it was, and I think they were kind of scared of it, so they let us do what we wanted to do. There wasn’t this oppressive thumb that was like, ‘No, you can’t put this in there. You’ve got to do this. You’ve got to cast that person.’”

Revisiting Repo! The Genetic Opera for its 4K re-release churned up a lot of fond memories for Bousman. “I just found these pictures of us on set, and we were babies!” he says. “I was in my 20s, coming off the Saw movies, and it feels like a lifetime ago when this whole thing happened. But when I’m asked about my career, Repo! is one of my fondest memories. I think the reason why is because anytime you make a movie, it’s such an uphill battle. It is such a f–king uphill battle to get a movie made and get it cast, and then once you get it done, it’s a battle to get the edit that you want and then to get it into theaters.”

One of the 15 creepiest musicals of all-time according to ScreenRant, Repo! The Genetic Opera is currently back in theaters and in extra-gory 4K.
