Warning: Spoilers Ahead for the Black Clover Manga’s Final Arc!

Black Clover is finally over after 11 years of glorious battles and surprisingly compelling characters. In its world governed by magic, its protagonist, Asta, was cruelly left without any magical abilities whatsoever, whereas even his greatest rival and fellow Hage resident, Yuno, boasted phenomenal magical talent. It seemed utterly unfair, until Asta got his own five-leaf clover grimoire, leveling the playing field with Anti-Magic. But with this ominous ability suddenly bestowed on him, came additional questions, namely, whether his only connection to devils was with Liebe, or if Asta was born from a devil father.

Naturally, fan theories ran rampant, especially with the reveal of Astaroth, a name connection too on-the-nose for fans to reasonably ignore. The theory, connecting Asta by birth to one of the three rulers of the underworld, carried plenty of weight with the readers, even if the manga’s main chapters never explicitly confirm anything. Black Clover did manage to keep the mystery alive, though, with even chapter #379 introducing some fascinating twists worth considering as, even if the series didn’t confirm Asta’s father, it also certainly didn’t explicitly deny certain theories, either. Whether or not that’s important to Asta, though, is fundamentally up for reader interpretation, at least for now.

Black Clover Theory Suggests Astaroth Might Be Asta’s Father

As fans might remember, Black Clover’s Spade Kingdom Raid Arc concluded with Damnatio Kira confronting Julius Novachrono about his findings about the underworld. From what Damnatio could uncover, Megicula was not one of three rulers from the underworld, but was a likely successor of the missing devil called Astaroth. However, after Astaroth vanished around 20 years ago, Megicula took his place as one of the highest ranking devils.

So, where did Astaroth vanish? The likely chance is that the devil came to the world of the living and had a child with Licita called Asta.

“Just because somebody’s a devil doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a bad guy!!!”

While the theory may seem bogus to some, that might be why Licita was never scared of Liebe when he arrived on Earth and willingly adopted him as his son.

Megicula Might Have Been Astaroth’s Wife

Another detail to note is how Damnatio addressed Megicula while sharing his findings about the underworld with Julius Novachrono. When Damnatio mentioned Megicula as Astaroth’s “successor,” the kanji “後釜” Yuki Tabata used also meant “second wife.” This was odd, since there are several kanji variants to say successor, but Tabata used this specific one.

Therefore, there is a chance that Megicula was not just Astaroth’s successor but also his wife. Hence, when she found out that Astaroth had a child with Licita, she must have gotten jealous and cursed Licita using her Curse Magic. Another clue that supports this theory is that Licita’s name was likely derived from the Latin word “licitus,” meaning “having been permitted” or “lawful”. Maybe her name was a hint of her being Astaroth’s lawful wife.

Licita’s Magic Power And Lifeforce Absorption Must Have Been A Curse

Now, let’s focus on Licita. Unlike most people in Black Clover, she had two abilities, an unnamed ability to store mana-less objects inside other objects and the passive ability of Magic Power and Lifeforce Absorption. If one thinks about it, the second ability sounds less like a power and more like a curse.

Yes, it is true that Henry Legolant also has a similar power, but he only absorbs mana and not life force. This meant that, while Henry could still be with people, Licita had no choice but to stay in isolation. Also, if Licita had the power from birth, she would never have been able to have a child in the first place. This further solidifies that Licita must have been cursed with the ability and was not born with it.

Hence, given the circumstances, Licita must likely have asked Astaroth to leave her. However, instead of returning to the underworld, Astaroth must have wandered the Earth and eventually met Lucius Zogratis, a person who believed humans to be superior to devils. This ideal must have aligned with Astaroth’s, as after Megicula possibly cursed Licita and Lucifero killed her, Astaroth must have wanted to eliminate all devils.

This might be why Lucius Zogratis wanted to create Paladins. Paladins were basically immortal human beings with the powers of purified devils. Hence, while it may seem like Lucius was the one pulling the strings, all of it must have been part of Astaroth’s plan to safeguard humanity and destroy devils. Although, the devil may have taken a very roundabout route to see through his plan.

Black Clover Chapter 379 Might Have Confirmed Astaroth As Asta’s Father

As fans might recall, Black Clover chapter 379 played a pivotal part in the final battle, as Lucius Zogratis powered up into his “Magic Great Emperor” transformation. While it seemed like the power up would give Lucius the upperhand, Asta and Yuno were able to push him back. That’s when Lucius played his trump card. He brought out Licita, leaving both Asta and Liebe shocked and vulnerable.

While this move may seem justified to some since Lucius must have wanted to play mind games with Asta, it makes no sense unless either Lucius or Astaroth had a connection with Licita. This is because, if Lucius wanted to resurrect Licita, he would have had to recover her body moments after her death. But why was Lucius near the location of Licita’s death in the first place?

Licita was not a key figure from the past like Acier Silva or Morgen Faust, but simply a woman living in isolation. Therefore, the only possibility is that she must have had a connection with either Astaroth or Lucius, further solidifying the theory that Astaroth is Asta’s father.

The only question is, if Astaroth is truly Asta’s father, why does Lucius call Asta the “Flaw of the World?” Is it because Asta can interfere with his plans for the perfect world, is it because he was the reason why Megicula went after Licita, or is it because he is truly a “Flaw of the World” for being a child born to a human and a devil? Hopefully, the manga’s finale will answer these questions.

Black Clover’s Finale Ultimately Doesn’t Explicitly Confirm Anything

While the theories are particularly compelling and in favor of cush a conclusion about Asta’s father, Black Clover’s final batch of chapters in Spring 2026 revealed nothing to confirm his lineage in a definitive manner. It’s a satisfying ending in multiple regards, with plenty of love for various characters’ romantic pairings, even if a key omission may rub readers the wrong way. Asta achieves everything he set out to do, has his fated final duel with Yuno, all after saving his homeland before becoming the Wizard King. Truth be told, while the story of Asta’s father is a beautiful mystery, an answer so late in the series would have felt perfunctory.

Asta was the storied underdog of the franchise. His entire gimmick was never giving up even in a world that entirely functions on magic, something he will never have, and he has grown not only to accept it, but his Anti-Magic makes him a natural disruptor. While it’s compelling to line up all the pieces about Asta’s lineage, despite Black Clover’s upcoming guidebook in August 2026 alongside its final volume teasing special “bonus pages”, making Asta’s birth something more special or sinister undermines how hard he worked to choose his own destiny.
