Right now, there isn’t a lot for Wheel of Time or How to Train Your Dragon fans to cling to. Wheel of Time is kind of in flux in general right now, with a ton of different projects being thrown around, and while How to Train Your Dragon has another live-action adaptation lined up, it’s still just a redux of the original from 2014.

But if you take both of those properties and mix them together, you could have something. Thanks to a new update on X, we have a lead on a project that’s aiming to combine the treacherous world of Wheel of Time with its own dragon-based sensibilities.

Partner Up With A Dragon

Announced on the project’s official site, Dragontwin is slated to arrive on PC in the future. It’s described as an open-world RPG/strategy game, where you play as a literal Dragontwin, a mortal who is bound to a dragon. The idea is that you ride your dragon around an open-world setting while using RPG and tactical mechanics to take on enemies, “rallying supporters to your cause,” and upgrading your skills along the way.

Dragontwin uses its own physics system to craft its dragons, focusing on “weighty movements on the fly instead of relying on baked animation clips.” Utilizing a character creation system, you’ll craft your character and your dragon, with an armor customization mechanic on the way eventually. The world itself can be freely explored through flight, and it promises settlements, random events, and sidequests.

The first region is in development now and is full of mountains, forests, and bodies of water. The creator aims for a 32km x 32km playable area. The goal right now is for the developers to push the physics system as hard as it can go while delivering fully destructible buildings with “reasonable framerates.”

Dragontwin Is Incredibly Ambitious

There’s plenty of progression to work through too, as you’ll start with an empty cave called The Lair to work out of, and eventually build it into a stronghold and a base of operations. A strategic mode is in the works too, requiring players to protect their lands and take over new ones. This particular feature is in the “planning phases” and may not make it in.

It’s not just going to be a 2-on-1 affair, either. Dragontwin will feature “epic battles,” where you command armies on your dragon, and rally people with the call of a Dragon Horn. The ultimate aim is to have battles with 100,000 soldiers.

The creator knows what they’re up against, and has provided a disclaimer: “This represents the vision for the game, it is not guaranteed that all planned features make it in the end. Dragontwin is a very ambitious project that will require substantial funding and team expansion to fulfill and the scope will be scaled accordingly as the situation evolves over the course of development.”

Just about every aspect of Dragontwin is ambitious. While it’s still in early development, you can follow the game on its official channels and its website. Playable early builds are provided to Patreon supporters, which is the “first phase” of Early Access. Once that’s taken care of, it’ll move to Steam.
