What’s DCU Canon from the DCEU?

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Peacemaker season 2, episode 1Peacemaker season 2 is here, providing key information about what is and isn’t DCU canon. Rather than rebooting the full DC Universe, DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran have elected to keep certain DCEU projects and characters a part of their new continuity. However, there are some notable changes/omissions to make past projects fit this new timeline.

As seen in Peacemaker season 2 episode 1, a handy recap is shown of everything that happened in the first season…according to the DCU. However, there are only a couple of changes, with more remaining intact than one might have assumed. Keeping that in mind, here’s everything (and everyone) from the DCEU Peacemaker season 2’s premiere confirms is DCU canon.

Kite-Man

Right at the very beginning of Peacemaker season 2’s premiere, we get a flashback to Chris Smith speaking with elementary school students.

Sharing his alleged defeat of Kite-Man, we know now that one of Batman’s most ridiculous and amazing foes in indeed part of the DCU canon in some fashion. Real-name Charles “Chuck” Brown, Kite-Man recently received his own non-canon animated series, having spun off from HBO’s Harley Quinn.

Eagly

Chris Smith’s loyal pet eagle is confirmed to still be DCU canon as well. Named Eagly, it’s been teased that the bald eagle who gives Peacemaker hugs will have an even bigger role in Peacemaker season 2, thanks to Michael Rooker’s new DC character Red St. Wild.

Wild is confirmed to be an eagle hunter with a vendetta against Eagly, having been described by James Gunn as “Eagly’s Lex Luthor”.

Peacemaker season 2 continues to be set in the Washington-set town of Evergreen. Originally, Evergreen was the home city of Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern in the comics before it was changed to Coast City.

Peacemaker’s Tragic Childhood Origins

The DCU-approved season 1 recap confirms that the death of Chris’ brother Keith still happened when they were kids. Forced to fight each other by their father, Keith suffered a seizure during their fight. However, Chris’ father Auggie still blamed Chris for Keith’s death, generating years of bitterness and resentment.

The DCU Maintains White Dragon’s Fate

Peacemaker killing his father still happened in the DCU. Known as The White Dragon, Auggie Smith was essentially a combination of two different versions of the extremely racist supervillain from the original comics. Likewise, Peacemaker season 2’s premiere now confirms Chris is living in his father’s house, still containing all of his father’s advanced technology.

Peacemaker Killing Rick Flag Jr.

If James Gunn was involved in a DCEU project like The Suicide Squad or Peacemaker season 1, the general rule of thumb seems to be that the majority of characters and events that occurred are still part of the DCU canon.

This includes Project Starfish and Peacemaker’s murder of Rick Flag Jr. in Corto Maltese. Now, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. has taken over as the new head of ARGUS, while naturally harboring a major vendetta against the man who killed his son.

11th St. Kids

Peacemaker Season 2 Poster

Peacemaker season 2’s premiere confirms that Chris Smith and his friend still refer to themselves as the “11th St. Kids”, inspired by the song of the same name from James Gunn’s favorite band, Hanoi Rocks.

Humorously, it seems as though the alternate Peacemaker from the new dimension that Chris Smith discovers is also a fan of the band, though they’re named “Hanoi Roxx” in this other dimension apart from the main DCU reality, one of Peacemaker season 2 episode 1’s best Easter eggs.

7

Judomaster

While he’s not directly featured in Peacemaker season 2’s premiere, Judomaster does make his return in the show’s brand-new opening dance number.

This confirms that the character is part of the DCU and will have some kind of role in future episodes. Based on the fact that Judomaster is shown dancing with other ARGUS agents, he may be recruited by the organization to take down Peacemaker. If so, here’s hoping they have enough Cheetos to fuel his addiction.

Project Butterfly

The DCU-approved recap of Peacemaker season 1 confirms that the 11th St. Kids still saved the world from an alien invasion, and that Project Butterfly still happened largely the same way as it was shown in the first season of the show when it was still set in the previous DCEU continuity.

Having been set up as a key part of Peacemaker season 2, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber is still a part of the DCU canon, with Chris Smith still having access to the pocket universe and its doorways to other dimensions.

Having been created by his father, Chris uses and explores the QUC in the premiere episode, explaining how he accidentally discovers the alternate reality where he’s the hero he’s always wanted to be, his brother and father are alive, and the three of them live and work together a the hero team known as The Top Trio.
