Timothée Chalamet is rapidly rising into eternal Hollywood stardom, becoming a decorated leading man. The actor’s top films of the past few years consistently receive mass attention in movie theaters, at awards ceremonies, and on streaming services. This month, Chalamet’s 2024 film A Complete Unknown finally enters the virtual shelves of HBO Max, following an initial stint on another service.
The popular musical biopic is one of Max’s most anticipated May releases, and is expected to top the streamers’ charts. James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown depicts Bob Dylan’s tumultuous rise to greatness in the 1960s New York music scene, culminating in one career-making performance. The film received positive reviews upon its release, including a 6/10 from Screen Rant and 82% on Rotten Tomatoes—with distinct applause for the lead actor’s portrayal of the musical icon.
A Complete Unknown also earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Actor in a Leading Role. The 2024 movie ultimately lost each category to other top films of the year. Still, Chalamet’s biopic proved popular among audiences, grossing $75 million at the U.S. box office and $140.5 million worldwide. A Complete Unknown experienced further success following its initial streaming debut, and has since maintained steady viewership.
A Complete Unknown Enters HBO Max on May 27
Following its theatrical premiere in December 2024, A Complete Unknown released on VOD in February 2025 and on streaming that March. Hulu won the honor to debut Chalamet’s popular drama on streaming. Upon its March 27 release, A Complete Unknown became an instant streaming hit.
Despite its disappointing showing at the Oscars, the movie’s streaming figures surpassed those of the winning films, including the 2025 Best Picture, Anora. Chalamet’s drama was the most streamed movie in the United States during its first week on Hulu. This streaming victory signals both the film’s popularity and Chalamet’s star power, and bodes well for the film’s performance on HBO Max.
The Academy Award-nominated A Complete Unknown enters HBO Max on May 27, 2026. It is among the streamer’s most anticipated releases this month, though it faces heavy competition. Max kicked-off the month with the streaming debut of Margot Robbie’s $241.6 million romance, Wuthering Heights. The streamer’s entire May release slate is stacked, including Charli xcx’s A24 mockumentary, The Moment, arriving May 29.
A Complete Unknown Will be Joining Five Other Hit Timothée Chalamet Movies on Max
A Complete Unknown will be at home on HBO Max, among five other Chalamet-led blockbusters. The streamer has amassed an impressive collection of Chalamet’s top performances. Many of the actor’s most popular, highly acclaimed films are currently streaming on HBO Max, including Call Me By Your Name, Dune: Part One, Wonka, Dune: Part Two, and Marty Supreme (2025).
A Complete Unknown will be the sixth Chalamet-led film currently on the service. Following its arrival, HBO Max will officially offer every Chalamet performance that earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination—Call Me By Your Name, A Complete Unknown, and Marty Supreme. However, Call Me By Your Name leaves the service on May 31.
These films have not only earned the lead actor critical and popular praise, they have garnered impressive viewing numbers for HBO Max. Marty Supreme still stands atop Max’s top-five movies in the U.S., following its April debut (via FlixPatrol).
The highly-anticipated A Complete Unknown will likely follow this pattern and top the streamer’s watch charts, joining Marty Supreme at the top of the HBO Max watchlist podium.
