The Upcoming Sci-Fi Series Set To Revitalize Cyberpunk

Prime Video has stood out for its sci-fi TV shows, and one of its upcoming projects from the genre comes from a well-known franchise that can save cyberpunk. Some of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time can be found on Prime Video, with some of them becoming hidden gems from this platform.

Prime Video has some exciting TV shows across different genres scheduled for a 2026 release, and in the branch of sci-fi, it has a huge project coming up. Prime Video will release a Blade Runner TV show in 2026, and given its source material and the platform’s sci-fi track record, it can save cyberpunk.

What Is Blade Runner 2099 About?

Blade Runner 2099 is Prime Video’s upcoming sci-fi miniseries, and it’s part of the Blade Runner franchise. Created by Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099, like the rest of the franchise, is taken from Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Within the Blade Runner timeline, Blade Runner 2099 is a sequel to the 1982 movie and 2017’s Blade Runner 2049.

As such, Blade Runner 2099 is set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049, and it follows Cora (Hunter Schafer), a fugitive replicant who teams up with Olwen (Michelle Yeoh), an aging Blade Runner, to protect her brother. This mission leads them into a conspiracy that threatens the city as it struggles to rebuild.

Blade Runner 2099 follows the core themes of the franchise, such as humanity, empathy, identity, and more, and, at the time of writing, it doesn’t have an official release date, but it’s scheduled to be released in 2026.

A Live-Action Blade Runner TV Show Was Long Overdue

Although the world of Blade Runner began in 1968 with Dick’s novel, it gained popularity in 1982 with Ridley Scott’s movie. Blade Runner wasn’t well-received when it was released, but it’s now regarded among the best movies of all time and one of the most influential ones, as well.

Despite its later success, Blade Runner didn’t get a sequel until 2017, but in the meantime, the franchise grew with comic books, novels, video games, and an animated TV show in 2021. Titled Blade Runner: Black Lotus, the show aired on Adult Swim in 2021, and it received mixed reviews.

Given the popularity of the Blade Runner franchise, it’s surprising that it hasn’t gotten a live-action TV show until now, and as exciting as Blade Runner 2099 is, there’s a lot of anticipation and high hopes around it.

Can Blade Runner 2099 Be Better Than The Movies?

After the success, impact, and quality of both Blade Runner movies, the bar is very high for Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099. A key aspect of the movies that led to their success is their visuals and futuristic aesthetic, which Blade Runner 2099 has to do right to feel like part of this universe, and this will mostly depend on the show’s budget.

Blade Runner 2099’s story will also be key to its success and will inevitably be compared to the movies, and it has to expand and add to this extensive world so it can not only succeed but also match (or even surpass) the movies. It’s too early to say if Blade Runner 2099 will be better than the movies, but it certainly has potential.
