Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is developing a new L.A. noir series for MGM+. Sutter is best known as the creator of Sons of Anarchy, which aired on FX for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014, following the lives of a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club in the fictional town of Charming in California’s Central Valley.

Now, according to Deadline, Kurt Sutter is developing an L.A. noir series for MGM+, which is reportedly set in the 1950s and “centers on a private investigator dealing with crime and dirty cops in the shadow of glamorous Hollywood.” Sutter serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer under his SutterInk banner.

The new MGM+ series represents Kurt Sutter’s first venture into the noir genre, but a return to Los Angeles crime drama after FX’s The Shield, on which he began his career as a staff writer and later became an executive producer. The Shield follows a corrupt division of the Los Angeles Police Department that uses illegal methods to maintain law and order.

After The Shield, Sutter returned to FX for Sons of Anarchy and later co-created its spin-off series, Mayans M.C., which aired for five seasons from 2018 to 2023. Most recently, Sutter created Netflix’s hit Western drama The Abandons, which premiered last week to 7.3 million views in its opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Sutter is also developing a new biker series for Apple TV titled Nomad starring Jason Momoa, which is set in the violent underworld of New Zealand’s outlaw biker gangs. Sutter is co-writing the project with Chris Collins, who will serve as the showrunner.

Overall, an L.A. noir series seems like a project perfectly suited to Sutter’s sensibilities. Since The Shield, Sutter has explored crime-related issues such as corrupt police officers, gang violence, drug trafficking, and prostitution in Los Angeles. However, his new noir series will shift the setting back to 1950s Los Angeles, but deal with similar issues such as crime and corrupt cops.
