Magic: The Gathering‘s latest set is posed to bring not just one, but two powerful creature types back to Standard when it comes out next month. Many players already suspected that we would see Eldrazi return in some form in Edge of Eternities, and it was confirmed today that previous leaks showing a new Eldrazi card were real. However, a surprising second creature type will also be returning to Standard, and it may even be more powerful than Eldrazi.
Funnily enough, in anticipation of Edge of Eternities upcoming release, I saw several posts jokingly claiming that this creature type would return in the new set. It’s hard to say if these were genuine leakers trying to disguise their sharing of sensitive information beneath a thick layer of irony or simply a funny coincidence. Either way, it’s no joke, as of Edge of Eternities, Slivers will once again be Standard Legal in Magic: The Gathering.
Edge of Eternities Is Bringing Slivers Back To Standard
The Last Standard Set To Include Slivers Was Core Set 2015
The return of both Eldrazi and Slivers was confirmed in today’s WeeklyMTG stream on Twitch. For the uninitiated, Slivers are fearsome creatures that quickly adopt the mutations of their brood mates. This is represented mechanically through each Sliver card’s ability to grant all others – or at least the Slivers you control – a new ability.

Following its successful Final Fantasy set, Magic: The Gathering will be featuring another iconic video game franchise in an upcoming release.
The new artifact, Thrumming Hivepool, creates two Sliver tokens during your upkeep step, and also gives every Sliver you control double strike. The card also heavily implies that this won’t be the only Sliver card in Edge of Eternities through its Affinity for Slivers. It would be strange to give this card a cost reduction for having Slivers if it was the only way to make slivers in the set.
Aside from implying that there will be other Sliver cards in Edge of Eternities, Affinity for Slivers can also make this a very powerful card. As its cost is completely colorless, this card can be played at no cost if you control six Slivers. Even controlling just a few gets it on the board early, and gives all your slivers a powerful combat advantage. Depending on how many are in the set, this could really shake up the Standard meta. It will also likely work very well with the first Magic: The Gathering set coming in 2026.
Slivers Will Work Well With Next Year’s Lorwyn Set
Lorwyn Typically Features Changelings, Which Can Count As Slivers
Magic’s next in-universe set is Lorwyn Eclipsed, coming January 23, 2026. Although there are no Slivers on the plane, one of Lorwyn’s main creature types from our last visit was Changelings. These creatures have the ability to be treated as all creature types, which includes Slivers. So, between whatever Slivers we get in Edge of Eternities and Lorwyn Eclipsed‘s likely inclusion of Changelings, cards that grant all Slivers certain abilities could be very powerful.

Since Thrumming Hivepool is colorless, it can work in any deck using Slivers or Changelings. We’ll have to see how many of either type we get, but depending on how many abilities like this we see in Edge of Eternities, Slivers could be about to make a big splash in Standard. At the very least, Eternal Magic: The Gathering formats, like Commander, just got a powerful new tool for existing Sliver decks.
