The Big Bang Theory Officially Leaves Sheldon Behind For 2026 Return

As shocking as it might sound, The Big Bang Theory franchise is finally moving on from its original breakout character Sheldon Cooper in 2026. It took a while for The Big Bang Theory to find its feet, partially because the sitcom didn’t initially know who its true stars were. The show cast sitcom veterans Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco, who had already starred in Roseanne and 8 Simple Rules… For Dating My Teenage Daughter, respectively, as the lovelorn nerd Leonard and the glamorous girl next door, Penny.

However, it was the relative unknown Jim Parsons who soon stole the show and viewers’ hearts as the irascible Sheldon Cooper. An all-time great sitcom antihero, Sheldon was a fastidious figure whose self-obsession and exacting standards made Georg Constanza seem generous, and Monica Geller seem laidback. Parsons gave the performance of a career as Sheldon, and, by the time The Big Bang Theory’s series finale rolled around, it was no surprise that the ending of the show focused on his Nobel Prize win, rather than Penny and Leonard’s fate.

In case anyone failed to realize that Sheldon was now the center of the sitcom franchise’s universe, The Big Bang Theory’s spinoffs made this impossible to miss. The first spinoff, Young Sheldon, was a prequel that centered on the title character’s eventful childhood in a small town in Texas. The second, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, was a spinoff from Young Sheldon that focused on the doomed marriage of Sheldon’s dim-witted but well-meaning older brother.

As evidenced by this rundown, Sheldon gradually went from being a particularly popular breakout character in the original show’s early seasons to the fulcrum at the center of the entire multi-show sitcom franchise. This was both a good and bad thing for the spinoffs, as Sheldon was a compelling protagonist in Young Sheldon, but Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage felt barely linked to The Big Bang Theory since Georgie only appeared in two episodes of the original show.

Now, the upcoming HBOMax spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is set to finally put a different corner of the franchise’s world in the spotlight after two spinoffs that were directly tied to Sheldon and his family. An ambitious, big-budget sci-fi comedy, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe sees Kevin Sussman’s titular hapless comic book store owner travel through the multiverse after he accidentally destroys the sitcom’s original universe with a device created by Sheldon and Leonard.

Although the official plot synopsis does make mention of the original show’s heroes, there is no reason to think that Parsons or Galecki will make an onscreen appearance in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. In fact, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe‘s cast of characters doesn’t include any of the original Pasadena gang, instead centering its story on Stuart, his love interest Denise, the gang’s longtime colleague Bert, and Sheldon’s professional nemesis Kripke.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Changing The Big Bang Theory’s Franchise Is A Huge Risk

This represents a massive risk for the sitcom franchise, as it means that Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’s story is akin to a Friends follow-up that didn’t feature any appearances from Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, or Phoebe. For this very reason, the show could well work, as it might be an opportunity for the sitcom franchise to feel more substantial and expansive by fleshing out its existing supporting stars.

However, in terms of convincing fans of the franchise’s earlier shows to tune in, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has a tough task ahead of it. If the spinoff had been the first follow-up to The Big Bang Theory, its return to the original show’s supporting cast might have been an easier sell. However, after the story of Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage invested so much time in getting viewers to care about Sheldon’s family and their world, it could be hard for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe to bring back The Big Bang Theory’s original setting.
