Los Angeles Knight Riders scripted history by winning their first-ever Major League Cricket (MLC) title after defeating Washington Freedom by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling final at the Oakland Coliseum. Defending 164, the Knight Riders held their nerve in a dramatic finish to seal a memorable one-run victory, with Sunil Narine delivering a match-winning all-round bowling performance to earn both the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament awards.
Andre Fletcher and Colin Munro lay the foundation before Washington fight back
After being asked to bat first, Los Angeles Knight Riders made a positive start through Colin Munro and Andre Fletcher. The opening pair added valuable runs in the powerplay, with Fletcher leading the charge through an entertaining 47 off just 27 deliveries, including seven boundaries and a six. Munro complemented him well with 40 from 29 balls, striking four sixes to keep the scoreboard moving.
Washington Freedom struck back strongly in the middle overs after removing Andre Russell and Narine for ducks in quick succession. Rovman Powell also failed to make an impact, leaving LAKR under pressure. However, Matthew Tromp played a crucial counter-attacking knock, smashing 39 off only 21 balls with three fours and three sixes to revive the innings.
Late contributions from Jason Holder (8), Jahmar Hamilton (10) and Saif Badar, who scored a quick 8 off four deliveries, helped Los Angeles push their total to 164 before being bowled out in 19.4 overs.
Washington’s bowling unit shared the wickets effectively. Ben Dwarshuis was the standout performer with figures of 3 for 31, while Mitchell Owen, Nikhil Chaudhary and Rachin Ravindra claimed two wickets each. Saurabh Netravalkar chipped in with one wicket and maintained excellent control by conceding just 23 runs from his four overs.

Sunil Narine and Jason Holder trigger collapse before dramatic finish
Chasing 165 for the championship, Washington Freedom never quite found sustained momentum despite a few crucial partnerships. Mitchell Owen, Steven Smith and Rachin Ravindra all departed cheaply as Narine and Holder struck early blows. Andries Gous attempted to steady the innings with a composed 40 off 35 balls, while Nikhil Chaudhary added 25 to keep the chase alive. The game, however, swung decisively in LAKR’s favour as Narine dismantled the top order, finishing with exceptional figures of 3 for 13 from his four overs.
Holder matched Narine’s impact by picking up three wickets for 31 runs, ensuring Washington remained under pressure throughout the chase. Despite the setbacks, Obus Pienaar produced a sensational late assault, blasting 53 off just 24 deliveries with three fours and five towering sixes to bring Freedom within touching distance of the target.
With tension at its peak in the closing moments, Washington required just a handful of runs but continued losing wickets at crucial stages. Lockie Ferguson struck a boundary in the final over to keep hopes alive, yet the Knight Riders held their composure to restrict Freedom to 163 for 9 from their 20 overs, sealing an unforgettable one-run victory.
