Steam Machine Price Leak Horrifies Gamers, And We Can See Why

The Steam Machine is all set for a Summer 2026 release, but as its launch nears, the biggest question right now is: At what cost? Well, the leaks aren’t very promising and have left the community in a dilemma.

According to sources, the 2026 model will carry a tag that is “nowhere near” where it was originally planned, but Valve has yet to announce the exact pricing.

The gaming hardware market in 2026 is under tremendous pressure due to the rise of AI, which has contributed to spikes in chip prices and affected the supply chain. It’s only natural that modern hardware prices will reflect the current conditions, but it has also sent a huge fraction of the consumer market into a hibernating state: No one wants to invest in a new console or PC part until the prices return to normal.

The Steam Machine has been a highly anticipated device since it was first announced in late 2025. The idea of a PC-like console featuring modern hardware that embraces SteamOS’s versatility and is highly portable is undeniably attractive, to say the least. At the end of the day, however, everything boils down to whether it will be affordable and, more importantly, worth it.

At this point, most Steam Machine leaks point to a price significantly higher than the initial expectation of $700-800, potentially around $1300 and up to $1500. And this has left fans wondering whether it’s going to be a viable purchase at all, as is particularly evident in one Reddit post.

“I’m one of the fifteen people who were genuinely planning on getting one. I was already bracing myself for something pretty expensive… back when it was announced a year ago. There’s zero chance I’ll get a Machine if the Deck’s price increase is an indicator,” one comment read, with several others echoing the thought.

“I think the Steam Deck price hike was kinda of a message. A way to soften the blow,” another popular comment read, referring to the Deck receiving a massive price increase of $240-300 last month. Of course, this change wasn’t received well either.

Fans are also worried about getting stuck with underwhelming hardware at an overpriced rate that they will regret in a few years’ time. “At this point, Steam should give up on this and try again in 5 years time. I would be tempted to buy it, but the fact that you can’t upgrade the GPU or the CPU means that in a few years time, I’m gonna be stuck with 1200$ box with the performance of a worse PS5,” a comment said.

Many aren’t even sure where the Steam Machine fits in this market, especially if it sells for $1500. We’d say it still sounds like a great PC-console hybrid for the living room. But with that kind of pricing, it likely won’t find much success and could follow the fate of the original Steam Machines, which were discontinued by 2018.

With all that said, it would be wise to wait for Valve to drop the actual price and final specs before delivering a verdict. Until then, we recommend taking any concerning speculations with a grain of salt, even though they seem quite believable at this point.
