A surprise streaming platform has surpassed Netflix‘s total viewership record.
Despite the abundance of competition, Netflix is still widely regarded as one of the best streaming services. New original movies and seasons of television are released on a weekly basis, along with existing films and series being added to the platform’s library. Stranger Things, Squid Game, Bridgerton, Wednesday, KPop Demon Hunters, and Carry-On are only a handful of the many titles that have become massive streaming successes.
However, according to the research firm Digitall (via Bloomberg), the average user spent 99 minutes per day on YouTube in 2025, as opposed to 93 minutes a day on Netflix. The year before, Netflix was ahead of YouTube when it came to this metric. YouTube also continues to be ahead of Netflix when it comes to the total amount of time spent on the respective platform.
The latter achievement is unsurprising because YouTube is free and has more users, whereas Netflix requires a paid subscription and therefore has fewer users. Engagement on YouTube is continuing to grow at a rapid pace with individuals over the age of 55 and the most active users are between the ages of 18 and 24.
