Steam has been on a roll this year. Between the launch of the Steam Controller, the new Steam Machine hardware rollout, and the impending release of the Steam Frame VR device, Valve has been busy.
Of course, Steam, one of the biggest marketplaces on the planet, is still fully operational. There have been multiple summer sales, genre sales, and even extra features added to the platform over the past few weeks. The company is constantly trying to keep people engaged with Steam, and you can do that better than ever this week.
Over on Reddit, Steam users are discussing some free downloads you can grab right now on the platform. Just know that you only have a limited amount of time to do it.
To celebrate the launch of the “Discovery Queue” feature, Steam is offering three free sticker downloads to Steam users. If you’re thinking “why stickers?” – they were deployed by Valve as part of a free item quest via the Discovery Queue system. A new feature added to Steam that, in theory, helps you discover “new releases, classics, and unique indie gems” amid the chaos of the storefront.
Here’s a quick rundown from Valve on how to get your free downloads: “Go through your Steam Discovery Queue to earn free stickers. You can find the queue on the homepage, or any tag or genre page. Click here to visit your queue and get started.”
It’s a pretty simple promotion: just sift through your Discovery Queue, and you’re good to go. You can also customize your queue and remove categories such as videos, early-access products, soundtracks, and unreleased games. Once you’re done, you can nab two dragon stickers and one chicken.
Both the chicken and dragon designs are also available in the Steam Points Shop, which is unlocked by shopping on Steam or by “contributing to the Steam community.”
Steam has a pivotal year ahead. While it doesn’t need any of its hardware to be a complete success, there’s a lot of clamoring right now in the gaming industry regarding consoles and physical ownership. Xbox is laying off hundreds of workers this week in a massive restructuring, and Sony is ditching the PS3 and Vita storefronts while eliminating physical discs in the next few years.
Meanwhile, Steam is just coasting along, enjoying the scenery, and pumping out hardware left and right. The console market will have to fight an uphill battle by the time the next generation hits, since the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix hardware will be astronomically expensive if nothing changes.
