It’s not uncommon for game developers to take inspiration from some of the big titles, such as Stardew Valley, The Sims, and Animal Crossing. That was exactly what the developers of the upcoming game, Moonfrost, did as they were working on shaping this new world where players take on the role of Frost Hunter.
Said to be a “premium cosy farming life-sim RPG for PC,” Moonfrost has created its own magical world and systems while working hard to maintain a familiar but unique experience for fans of this cozy genre. After a second moon appeared in the skies, constant storms of icy meteorites, known as Moonfrost, caused chaos and ruined the world as it was. However, some special people, known as Frost Hunters, have learned how to harness the power of the Moonfrost.
While that storyline sounds very RPG-heavy, the players’ role in this broken world is full of farming, friendships, and even romance, much like the cozy games that inspired its developers. This next-gen pixel art world with dynamic lighting, weather, and wildlife systems offers players the simple pleasures of farming, fishing, cooking, and even exploring dangerous temples.
Decorating your homestead into a cozy cottage, castle, or whatever you wish it to be is handled more similarly to The Sims designs than any of the main farming sims. This method gives players the chance to truly customize their world and stretch their creativity.
There will likewise be plenty of things to craft, including decorations, tools, outfits, and even hairstyles. Using these craftable recipes can further determine a player’s unique style in the game. Unfortunately, it looks like Moonfrost will be a single-player-only game, though. But we can always post images of our houses and creations on social media to show others.
Of course, what would a cozy game like this be without some colorful NPCs to interact with, and potentially date? Moonfrost‘s story has a tragic past, which naturally has caused the citizens of this world to have their own unique fears and flaws. So far, we don’t know how many of the NPCs will be romanceable, but friendships and romance are going to be a solid part of the game while we uncover the story itself.
Development of Moonfrost has had a few evolutions over the years. Originally, the game was planned to be a blockchain game, as developers believed it could help support some of the ownership ideas in the game, yet as time went on, it went in a different direction to more of a standard format. The game will not include any NFTs or blockchain features going forward. Additionally, the entire game has been handcrafted by humans with no AI.
Although there is no official release date set at this time for Moonfrost, there is a free demo available on Steam for everyone who would like to check out this unique farming experience and harness their own Frost Hunting powers. Moonfrost can be wishlisted on Steam and Epic Games, though there are currently no confirmed plans to bring it to Mac or consoles.
