This Washington-based diplomat had two pieces of good news to celebrate on Saturday: a historically impressive romp in a meaningless third-place game and what his government considered a historically meaningful low number of citizens running afoul of American laws during the tournament.

That’s Christian Turner, the United Kingdom’s new ambassador to Washington, at England’s semifinal defeat to Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday. After Sunday’s third-place victory over France, Turner boasted in a social-media post that “with over 50,000 travelling fans over the tournament, only 23 consular cases” were handled by the country’s diplomats.
