Sony is officially heading back into the world of video game adaptations with an R-rated twist.

During its CinemaCon presentation on Monday, Sony Pictures announced that Bloodborne, one of PlayStation’s biggest games, is being developed into an R-rated animated feature. The project is being produced by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, with content creator and longtime fan Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin also on board as a producer. Lyrical Media, the parent company of Lyrical Animation, is co-financing the project alongside Sony.

While plot and casting details are being kept tightly under wraps, the game helps offer an idea of the tone audiences can expect. The original Bloodborne game follows a lone traveler navigating a haunting, gothic city overrun by twisted mobs and terrifying creatures lurking around every corner. Known for its extreme difficulty and deeply layered lore, the game has built a devoted fan base over the years, with many players still pondering its mysteries long after the game’s release.

That reputation is a big reason why the adaptation is already generating buzz. Considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all time, Bloodborne was developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, with its atmospheric world perfectly suited for an animated format that can bring its horror elements to the big screen. The decision to go R-rated also signals that Sony isn’t holding back when it comes to capturing the game’s dark and brutal tone.

Involving McLoughlin also adds to the intrigue. With over 48 million followers across his platforms, the content creator has spent years playing and discussing games like Bloodborne, making him a unique bridge between the fan community and the film’s creative team.

Bloodborne is the latest in a growing lineup of PlayStation adaptations as Sony continues to expand its gaming IP into film and television. The studio recently announced a Helldivers movie directed by Justin Lin and starring Jason Momoa, set for release in 2027. Previous collaborations include Uncharted, which grossed over $400 million worldwide, Peacock’s Twisted Metal series, and HBO’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us, which helped set a new standard for video game adaptations.

A release date for the animated project has not yet been announced.
