Chris Hemsworth's New Goodfellas-Like Crime Thriller Gets First Official Look

The first official look has arrived for Chris Hemsworth‘s upcoming crime thriller film.

Only two months ago, Hemsworth starred in another crime thriller, Crime 101. The adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel featured the Thor star playing jewel thief Mike Davis, who is pursued by police detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo). With a “Certified Fresh” 88% score from critics and an 85% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, Crime 101‘s reviews were positive, with Hemsworth, Ruffalo, and the rest of the cast receiving praise for their performances.

On X, Hemsworth has now posted two images from the first day of filming in Australia for his new crime thriller movie Kockroach. The first image has him in character, wearing sunglasses and a suit and holding a lit cigarette, while the second shows him sitting on set in a chair that has the movie’s title on it. Hemsworth’s role previously belonged to Channing Tatum, who had to exit the project because of scheduling conflicts. Other cast members include Taron Egerton, who replaced Oscar Isaac due to scheduling conflicts, along with Zazie Beetz, Alec Baldwin, and Rachel Sennott.

The story is based on a novel written by William Lashner, which is a re-imagining of Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, although producer Andrew Lazar has described it as being akin to Goodfellas and Scarface. The official logline is “Kockroach is the story of a mysterious stranger who takes on New York’s criminal underworld, transforming himself into a larger-than-life crime boss in a city where power is everything.”

Matt Ross directs the film with a screenplay by Jonathan Ames, and Lazar produces alongside Christina Weiss Lurie. Ross directed all four episodes of the acclaimed Netflix miniseries Death by Lightning, which tells the story of President James Garfield and Charles J. Guiteau, who ended up assassinating him. Ross’ other directing credits include two episodes of Silicon Valley and the 2016 Viggo Mortensen movie Captain Fantastic.

For Hemsworth, Kockroach is an opportunity to make another well-received crime thriller. One area where it can surpass Crime 101 is at the box office, as the 2026 movie only grossed $72.5 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. The budget has not been reported yet for Kockroach and there is not a set release date yet.

This December, as a cast member of Avengers: Doomsday, Hemsworth’s next movie is expected to perform well at the box office. His return to playing Thor was already shown in one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie’s first teaser trailers. Another upcoming film for Hemsworth is Extraction 3, where he is playing the role of mercenary Tyler Rake again. While he continues to be a franchise actor, Kockroach offers a different kind of story outside a franchise.
