Saracchi ‘gutted’ to follow Iheanacho through Celtic exit door

Marcelo Saracchi is “gutted” to be leaving Celtic after the club failed to conclude an agreement to make his loan from Boca Juniors permanent.

The Uruguay left-back arrived in Glasgow last August and made 19 appearances in the Scottish Premiership as they pipped Hearts to the title under Martin O’Neill, who had two spells at the helm as Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy both departed during a tumultuous season.

However, the 28-year-old will not remain at Celtic Park for 2026-27, having become the latest in a long list of players to depart the club this off-season.

“I’m writing this to say goodbye. We had an intense, beautiful year together where we achieved so many of our goals,” Saracchi wrote on Instagram.

“My agent and I did absolutely everything within our power to make a return to Glasgow happen. I’m truly gutted that I won’t be able to continue at the club.

“However, I know our paths will cross again in the future. I wish you all nothing but the best for what’s ahead. Thank you for everything.”

Saracchi’s exit comes one day after Kelechi Iheanacho signed for Turkish Super Lig side Bursaspor, having turned down a new contract with Celtic.

Iheanacho joined the Bhoys on a one-year deal in September 2025 and scored five goals in just 13 Premiership outings for the club – only four of which were starts.

Celtic have also seen Luis Palma and Maik Nawrocki complete moves to Lech Poznan and Lens, respectively, while Kasper Schmeichel retired at the age of 39 after suffering a shoulder injury.

They have only made one signing thus far, bringing in Colombian striker Camilo Duran from Qarabag, ahead of opening their 2026-27 campaign at home to Dundee on August 3.
