India and the West Indies are facing each other in the third and final ODI in New Chandigarh on Saturday. Amid the attention surrounding the contest, veteran opener Rohit Sharma added another remarkable achievement to his already decorated ODI career by surpassing a long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar.
Rohit Sharma creates history in New Chandigarh
Rohit needed just two runs at the beginning of India’s innings to complete 10,000 ODI runs as an opener. He reached the landmark in style during the third ball of the match, flicking Jayden Seales for two runs.
The milestone saw Rohit rewrite Tendulkar’s 22-year-old record for the fewest innings required to reach 10,000 ODI runs while opening the batting. The Indian opener accomplished the feat in just 202 innings, comfortably bettering Tendulkar’s previous mark of 214 innings.
Tendulkar had reached 10,000 ODI runs as an opener against Australia in Brisbane in 2004. Rohit has now moved ahead of his former India teammate in the record books, underlining his extraordinary consistency at the top of the order.
Fastest to reach 10,000 ODI runs as openers in ODIs:
- Rohit Sharma – 202 innings
- Sachin Tendulkar – 214 innings
- Chris Gayle – 268 innings
- Sanath Jayasuriya – 303 innings
Rohit joins elite opening club
With the achievement, Rohit also became only the fourth opener in ODI history to cross the 10,000-run mark. He joins an exclusive group featuring Tendulkar, West Indies great Chris Gayle and Sri Lanka legend Sanath Jayasuriya. The record adds another significant chapter to Rohit’s career, particularly considering his recent form in the series. In the previous ODI, the right-handed batter produced a commanding century, scoring 101 from 75 balls with 10 fours and six sixes.
That innings also saw Rohit become only the third Indian batter after Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to complete 12,000 ODI runs. His latest achievement therefore comes just one match after another major personal milestone, making the ongoing series an especially memorable one for the veteran opener.

Record comes amid Rohit’s recent selection pressure
Rohit’s latest performances have also arrived during a period of considerable attention surrounding his place in India’s ODI plans. The veteran opener had faced questions over his future in the format after departing chief selector Ajit Agarkar informed him that the team wanted to consider moving forward with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Despite that uncertainty, Rohit remained the first-choice opener for the series.
His response on the field has been emphatic. After producing a century in the second ODI, Rohit followed it up by reaching another significant landmark in the third match and moving beyond fifty during his innings. For Rohit and his supporters, the recent run of performances provides further evidence of his continued importance at the top of India’s ODI batting order. With the 2027 ODI World Cup also on the horizon, his form and consistency will remain closely watched as India continue shaping their plans for the tournament.
