Superhero media is hard to avoid these days, as it is prominent on TV, the big screen, and even in the world of video games. The quality has certainly fluctuated over the years, but while these larger-than-life characters have had mixed success in theaters recently, superhero projects are still thriving on TV.

These kinds of shows experienced a big boom in the 1960s and became massive in the 90s, maintaining their relevance for over three decades. However, while there has been an abundance of fantastic series over the years that were heavily inspired by comic books, Prime Video’s Invincible is the most comic-accurate superhero show, and it continues to shine.

While the comics had a pretty solid audience, Invincible‘s televised adaptation caught everyone off-guard and quickly became one of the most talked-about projects of the decade. Alongside The Boys, it helped usher in a new era for superheroes, as the darker and more realistic tone set these fan favorites apart from the competition in a saturated market.

Unlike The Boys though, Invincible remained incredibly faithful to the comics during its first season and has continued this trend throughout. Although there have been some tweaks in terms of structure, pacing, and characters, the plot has stayed practically identical to the source material, making Prime Video’s version extremely familiar for those who read the original story.

Invincible‘s Hell episode did change aspects of the comics — something Robert Kirkman seems keen on continuing in the future, but this hasn’t come at the expense of the main narrative. Instead, it looks as though the series will opt to expand parts of the universe the comic was unable to cover, without deviating massively from the narrative.

Many Marvel and DC shows usually use characters and events from the comics but put their own spin on things, creating a completely different finished product. In comparison, Invincible is more like an anime adapting a manga, as it’s essentially the same story, albeit with a few tweaks and improvements along the way.

The likes of X-Men ’97 and Batman: The Animated Series have episodes that feel like they’re ripped straight from a comic, yet they sometimes suffer from combining way too much into a single outing. In contrast, Invincible season 4’s ending was given time to breathe and sets the stage for season 5 to keep on adapting these iconic storylines.

After finding a winning formula, there’s no reason for Invincible to change its approach now, suggesting it’ll remain comic-accurate throughout its entire run, with no other show coming close in this regard.

Invincible’s Comic Book Accuracy Is A Pivotal Reason For Its Success

Although many pieces of superhero media have strayed away from their source material and created completely new stories successfully, Invincible‘s faithfulness to the comics has been a huge positive. Fans who have followed this franchise since its inception can rest easy knowing the TV adaptation isn’t butchering what made the story so great in the first place.

Rather than taking Invincible‘s great characters and trying to come up with something different, Prime Video’s show has given this narrative fresh dimensions and introduced it to a new audience, while keeping comic readers happy. This makes the writing aspects far easier, as there isn’t a constant scramble for new material.

By taking the original story and transforming it into a script that can be split across multiple seasons, Invincible always has a clear direction that shouldn’t cause major delays. Sure, the animation has come under a lot of scrutiny and was the biggest factor behind such a lengthy gap between seasons 1 and 2, but there has since been stability.

Now, the show is being released annually, and people can be assured the writing will remain a key strength, since there are no plans to alter what works. This gives Invincible a level of guaranteed quality heading into every season, and while there are still areas it can improve, that pre-existing comfort is a pivotal way of ensuring viewers stick around.

When combining the already great narrative with fantastic voice acting performances from big names, there is no reason not to be confident about the series knocking it out of the park every time. Add in the fact that Invincible is making more surprise comic changes that complement the story rather than hurt it, and it’s safe to say things are going well.

It’s hard to even begin imagining what Invincible would look like had it not followed the comics, but thankfully, Prime Video made the correct decision to embrace Robert Kirkman’s vision. As a result, it remains one of the greatest superhero projects on TV and is bound to keep getting bigger as it progresses.
