Passenger Ending Explained

The horror genre has had an incredibly successful year thus far. A number of high quality horror films have been released in 2026, from Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, Sam Raimi’s Send Help, Faces of Death, to Obsession, which has turned out to be a huge hit. The most recent horror release, though, is Passenger, which has employed a combination of scares, plot twists, and a great final act to deliver an entertaining ride.

Passenger follows the story of a young couple who are followed by a demon while they live in their van. It’s part a road trip movie and part horror, which makes it an interesting genre blend.

The characters slowly begin to realize what they are facing as the story progresses, and their focus then turns to how to kill the demon and be free of its curse. Naturally, this culminates in a desperate battle at the end to defeat the evil entity for good. And perhaps unsurprisingly, the showdown transpires at a church, a place meant to be a safe heaven from demonic spirits. What’s more, the church itself, through the patron saint it’s dedicated to, bears a strong connection to their enemy.

The ending is tense, action-packed, and full of scares, making Passenger one of the most compelling and memorable horror movies so far this year.

When Tyler, played by Jacob Scipio, finally realizes that he and his fiancé are being tracked by a demon, he and Maddie immediately begin to think of ways to stop this evil. They both know immediately that it’s not as easy as just killing the demon, so they begin to lean on what they’ve heard before.

Earlier in the film, Maddie meets Diana, a woman at a van festival that warns her of the dangers of living on the road. She passes on to Maddie a few key rules of living in their van: don’t drive at night unless they have to, don’t ever stop, and follow the hobo road symbols whenever they see them.

Tyler and Maddie eventually begin to apply these rules, choosing to stop during the nighttime and go to a hotel or a diner to wait until sunrise. They also don’t stop for people on the side of the road or accidents that they may see, as this is how the demon became attached to them in the first place at the beginning of the horror film.

They follow these rules as they begin to travel to Arizona, where Diana said she was headed. Maddie and Tyler want to speak to Diana again to ask her how to get rid of the demon, so they drive on the road for days (with nighttime stops) in order to get to her. When they finally arrive at the camp Diana is staying at, the people there aren’t very welcoming.

The others there sense that Tyler and Maddie have brought danger with them, and when Diana sees them and realizes, she warns everyone to leave. She initially says that she doesn’t want to help, but quickly changes her mind and agrees to lead them to the Church of St. Christopher which, in road legend, is said to be the only place of refuge from the demon.

Diana then hops in her car and tells the duo to follow her as she leads them to the church, which she warns isn’t on any map, digital or physical. When Diana gets into her car, the demon is sitting in the backseat and proceeds to kill her violently. Maddie and Tyler watch on in horror as they realize what’s happened to the only person willing to help them.

They then got back on the road and begin heading in the general direction that Diana said. They then piece together the origins of the demon through their knowledge of Saint Christopher himself. It’s said that Saint Christopher traveled by foot with a monk for many days before realizing that the person he was with was actually a demon, and it’s this demon that’s now following Maddie and Tyler.

Now that they know where the demon comes from, Maddie and Tyler begin to think about how they can kill the demon. They know that the necklace of St. Christopher burned the demon earlier in the story, so they believe that it’ll hurt it if it follows them into the church.

As they get closer to the church, Maddie and Tyler begin to go into a more remote area of the state. They eventually see a hobo sign which tells them to go off-road, so Maddie drives into the desert and begins to head into the darkness. The demon’s presence increases when they do this, showing that they’re on the right path.

The demon then begins to kick up more of a fuss as they get closer to the church. The car begins to rattle, and the demon appears in the car, tormenting them and trying to get them to crash the car. Eventually, Tyler dives out of the back of the van in order to allow Maddie to get to the church. At this time, it’s unclear if he’s dead or alive.

Maddie doesn’t stop and get out of the van when she gets to the church. Instead, she drives straight into the building, which appears to be abandoned. The demon remains in the van with her as she does this, but goes in and out of sight of the audience. She crashes straight into a statue of Saint Christopher, breaking the windshield and breaking the statue.

Although that injures the demon, as does simply being in the church, it’s still alive and trying to hurt Maddie. She then notices a sharp piece of the statue sticking out and decides to reverse, then drive forward. Doing so impales the demon, causing it to turn into an ash-like substance and disintegrate, thus lifting the curse Maddie and Tyler had on them.

Maddie and Tyler then reunite, with the latter using their GPS to call emergency services to the church, which is on fire. Maddie puts the ring on her finger as the two are relieved that the demon is gone from their lives. It’s a by-the-book ending for Passenger, for the most part, but is a satisfying conclusion nonetheless.
