Dutch defender wanted by Man Utd

Manchester United are preparing a major summer move for Micky van de Ven, with a reported £55 million bid being lined up as the club looks to rebuild its defensive core ahead of next season.

A key factor driving United’s interest is the uncertain situation at Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs are currently locked in a relegation battle, sitting inside the bottom three late in the season and at real risk of dropping out of the Premier League for the first time in decades.

That scenario would almost certainly trigger a wave of departures, with top players unwilling to compete in the Championship. Van de Ven is one of Tottenham’s most valuable assets, and United see a potential opportunity to capitalise if relegation becomes reality.

Even if Spurs survive, the instability surrounding the club has already attracted interest from multiple top sides, including United, who are actively targeting defensive reinforcements.

For United, the appeal is clear. Van de Ven is a modern centre back, combining elite pace with strong defensive instincts, making him ideally suited to a high line system.

Statistically, he stands out despite Tottenham’s struggles. He has played over 2,500 league minutes this season, underlining his importance and consistency in the side.

His defensive profile is built around recovery speed, often acting as the last line of defence when Spurs are exposed on the counter. That role is critical in modern football, and few defenders in Europe execute it as effectively.

At 25, Van de Ven fits United’s recruitment profile perfectly. He is young enough to develop further but already experienced at Premier League level. His pace also addresses a clear weakness in United’s current defence, where recovery speed has often been exposed against quick transitions.

The proposed £55 million fee reflects both his quality and market demand. Tottenham paid just over £40 million for him in 2023, and his development since then has only increased his value.
