The Melbourne Stars have made two important additions to their squad ahead of the 12th season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), with England duo returning to the side after Marizanne Kapp withdrew from the upcoming campaign. Kapp, who has one year remaining on her Stars contract, has opted to prioritise her international commitments with South Africa.

Marizanne Kapp withdraws to focus on South Africa commitments

Melbourne Stars confirmed on Tuesday that Kapp will not feature in WBBL 2026 because of her international schedule. The 36-year-old all-rounder informed the franchise that she wanted to concentrate on her responsibilities with South Africa. The timing of the WBBL final has played a key role in Kapp’s decision. South Africa are scheduled to play a Test against India from December 9, only four days after the WBBL final. With the international fixture coming so soon after the domestic tournament, Kapp has chosen to remain focused on her national commitments.

Kapp’s absence leaves the Stars without one of the most experienced all-rounders in the women’s game, but the franchise has moved quickly to strengthen its squad with two familiar overseas players. Stars general manager James Rosengarten acknowledged the significance of losing Kapp but said the club understood the player’s decision to prioritise South Africa.

“We are of course disappointed to be without someone of Marizanne’s calibre this season,” Rosengarten said in a statement. He described Kapp as one of the world’s finest all-round players while recognising her international priorities.

England duo to represent Melbourne Stars in upcoming WBBL

England duo Amy Jones and Dani Gibson have both committed to the Stars for the upcoming season after representing the club in WBBL 2025. Jones was Melbourne’s second-highest run-scorer last season, producing 234 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 125.80. Her consistency with the bat made her an important contributor during the campaign.

Gibson also made a useful impact, scoring 170 runs from 11 matches at an impressive strike rate of 139.34. Both players were part of the Stars side that reached the knockout stage before their campaign ended against the Perth Scorchers. Their return gives Melbourne continuity in the batting department while adding players who are already familiar with the franchise and their setup.

The return of Jones and Gibson was also identified as a priority by the franchise. Rosengarten highlighted their versatility and said their ability to contribute in multiple areas makes them valuable players in the WBBL format.

“It was a priority for us to have both Dani and Amy return this season, so we’re really pleased with this outcome. They are both very talented cricketers in multiple ways, which is so valuable in this format,” added Rosengarten.
