Matt Reeves’ New Batman Release Shockingly Kills One Of The Dark Knight’s Biggest Villains

Matt Reeves’ new Batman release is one of the most exciting Dark Knight projects in years, and this DC show just killed a massive Batman villain in a shocking manner. When one thinks of Reeves and Batman, it is usually connected to 2022’s The Batman, HBO’s The Penguin, and the larger The Batman Epic Crime Saga that he has created for the studio.

Reeves is one of the key creatives of DC Studios’ Elseworlds projects, which are those set outside the canon of James Gunn’s new DC Universe. At the moment, Reeves is dealing with criticism, as The Batman – Part II has suffered yet another delay. Once set to be released in 2025, Robert Pattinson’s Batman return will now premiere on February 18, 2028.

That movie is packed with extraordinary actors, as Marvel Studios stars Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan have joined the cast of The Batman – Part II alongside other new arrivals and multiple returning stars. That said, for anyone who wants to see a Batman release from Reeves while waiting another two years for the live-action movie, there is a perfect one.

Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Cartoonist Bob Kane received sole credit for creating the character for the next 76 years — on every comic, every TV series, every film — despite being only half of the real partnership. His uncredited collaborator wrote much of the original story, designed the cowl and cape, invented the name “Bruce Wayne,” named Gotham City, and helped create the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. DC finally added his name to all Batman credits in 2015. Who?

02

Batman: The Movie — released in July 1966 between the first and second seasons of the ABC TV series, featuring the “Holy Whatever, Batman!” tone, the four super-villain team-up (Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman), the shark-repellent Bat-spray, and the Batmobile/Batboat/Batcopter — is generally considered the first theatrical Batman feature film. Two earlier 1940s movie serials don’t qualify as standalone features. Which actor played Batman in this first theatrical feature?

03

Batman: The Animated Series (Fox Kids, 1992–1995) — the Bruce Timm/Eric Radomski production with the deco-noir “Dark Deco” backgrounds painted on black paper — is consistently ranked by fans and creators as the definitive screen Batman. Its central performance is so iconic that the actor reprised it across 30 years, every DC Animated Universe series, and a dozen Arkham-series video games. He died on November 10, 2022, and DC essentially treated his passing as the death of Batman’s voice. Name him.

04

Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) earned him an estimated $60–$90 million from a film for which his actual on-screen salary was a fairly modest $6 million — making it, dollar-for-dollar, one of the most famously lucrative single roles in Hollywood history. He achieved this by negotiating an unusual deal structure that other actors immediately tried (and largely failed) to copy. What was it?

05

After Ben Affleck stepped down from his planned solo Batman film, Warner Bros. handed the project to a new director who reconceived it as a noir-detective serial-killer story modelled on Se7en and Zodiac, runs 2h 56min, casts Robert Pattinson as a brooding second-year Bruce Wayne, and gives Paul Dano’s Riddler a Zodiac-style cipher gimmick. The Batman (2022) grossed $772 million worldwide. Who directed it?

06

Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997) — with Bat-nipples on the suit, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze spitting ice puns (“Let’s kick some ice!”), Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy, Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl, and an estimated $238 million box-office failure on a $125 million budget — is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films ever made. It killed the live-action Batman franchise for eight years until Batman Begins (2005). Who played Batman in it?

07

Cesar Romero’s Joker on the 1966–1968 ABC Batman series — white grease-paint, green wig, red lipstick, manic giggle — remains one of the most-cited comedic TV villains in American history. Romero, a leading-man matinée idol since the 1930s, agreed to the role on one condition: he refused to do a specific thing for the makeup. You can still see what he refused if you look closely. What did Romero refuse?

08

Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019) — the standalone, R-rated, $1.07-billion-grossing Joaquin Phoenix vehicle that exists outside any DC continuity — was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, the most of any comic-book-derived film at the time. It won Best Actor for Phoenix. It also won exactly one other Oscar that night. Which?

World’s Greatest Detective — or a Gotham red herring?

Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 is now out on Prime Video. The animated series is executive produced by Reeves and is very different from The Batman due to the fact that it is set in a retro version of Gotham City. In its new batch of 10 episodes, several Batman villains die, including one of the Dark Knight’s biggest foes, who Reeves fans know well.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 Kills A The Batman Villain

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Batman: Caped Crusader season 2.Reeves’ The Batman had the perfect idea of making its universe feel lived-in by including multiple classic DC villains. Some of them played supporting roles, while others had minor parts. That said, a couple were key to the film, with Paul Dano’s Riddler being the main villain of The Batman. That is why I was not shocked to see Reeves’ Batman series, which is a standalone project, unconnected to The Batman universe, once again use Edward Nygma in a key role. Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 sees the Riddler rise as he assumes the hot seat in Rupert Thorne’s empire.

After being a menace throughout the season, with this animated version of the Riddler more violent than Dano’s, I was shocked to see the DC series kill the villain. Not only that, but the Riddler was killed by another major foe in Batman: Caped Crusader season 2, as Thorn, seemingly an amalgamation of the popular villain Poison Ivy and the obscure DC Comics character Rose Canton, murdered the Riddler, gunning him down as revenge for Nygma having killed her father in the same manner. The Riddler’s death is a game-changer, and it continues a trend.

Batman: Caped Crusader Has Killed Several Major Villains

Batman: Caped Crusader is a show that prides itself on reinventing DC characters. Certain supporting characters have different skin colors, are female instead of male, or have completely different backstories and/or designs. Given how many Batman adaptations have been released over the years, it is perfectly fine for the animated show to get creative with its characters. That said, Batman: Caped Crusader has a shockingly high death toll, with the DC show killing several major Batman villains. In season 1, Harvey Dent turned into Two-Face and was later killed.

Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 adds many Batman villains to the list of deceased characters, with the Riddler, Rupert Thorne, Hugo Strange, Mr. Zero, Blockbuster, Mad Hatter, and more dying throughout the Prime Video superhero series’ new episodes. On the one hand, it is disappointing to lose so many beloved Batman villains in the show’s first two seasons. On the other hand, this makes the show feel more mature, and puts everyone in danger of dying at any time, which considerably ups the stakes. With major villains like the Riddler now dead, the door is open for the Batman series to introduce deep cuts.
