This fall, before Earth’s Mightiest Survivors become the new Avengers, Marvel Comics will be revisiting the Marvel Mangaverse with a special five-issue event, including two that are centered around Spider-Man, in honor of the event’s 25th anniversary. In fact, Spider-Man’s role in Marvel Mangaverse 25th anniversary event is unique, bookending this revival series with a two-part story that pairs Miles Morales’ Spider-Man with Illyana Rasputin’s Legion and Laura Kinney’s Weapon X-Tremis.
The Mangaverse 25th Anniversary specials “pay homage to modern manga storytelling while introducing new versions of fan-favorite Marvel characters and focusing on deep, world-building lore.” And, in doing so, they’ve delivered some exceptional costume redesigns that also pay homage while boldly reimagining them via the Marvel Mangaverse’s authentic aesthetic.
Miles Morales Goes From The Spider-Verse To The Mangaverse
Mangaka Yuji Kaku’s Mangaverse Miles Morales costume is far from the zaniest or most surreal redesigns in the bunch; Ghostlocke is a stunning Ghost Rider/Psylocke hybrid, for example, and Weapon X-Tremis is quite haunting. However, it may also be one of Miles’ best Spider-Man costume designs ever, and that’s due, in large part, to its simplicity—in Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1, anyway.
This design is surprisingly not dissimilar to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ Bodega Cat suit, fashioning Miles in a red, hooded sweatshirt and sneakers. He also wears bandage wraps and bracers, as well as baggy shorts atop his costume’s leggings, yet the Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1 cover and promotional art admittedly don’t give the clearest looks at the costume imaginable, so it’s possible that there are great design details still hidden in it.
As per the official Marvel website, the solicitation for Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1 reads as follows:
RETURN TO THE MANGAVERSE… JUST IN TIME TO SEE IT END?! 25 years have passed since our last visit to the Mangaverse and in Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1, we discover a world where technology no longer works and magic reigns supreme, where a looming apocalypse threatens to end the world in a sea of flames. That is, unless Miles Morales, Laura Kinney, and Illyana Rasputin have something to say about it! But as each attempt to stave off armageddon leads each further down the road of forbidden magic, these friends turned enemies must confront the question of whether their choices really will save the world – or doom it entirely!
Marvel Mangaverse’s Miles Gets A Big Upgrade In Web of Destiny
Interestingly, Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Destiny #1 presents a whole new Spider-Man design, this one being much more bizarre and supernatural. This cover depicts Miles in a torn, hooded cloak, with pink mystical energy shot from his wrist as webbing and emanating from his masked face in defining feature-like linework. The solicitation for Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Destiny #1 doesn’t tease what this new look is all about, though this anniversary event’s finale will surely be epic:
It all comes to a startling conclusion as Joe and Jack Kelly and artist Kenny Ruiz reunite in Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Destiny #1 to put Miles, Laura, and Illyana at the center of the end of the world. Will these former friends be able to put aside their differences and save the planet before it burns to ash around them?
A big weight is hoisted on the shoulders of Joe and Jack Kelly’s father-son writing duo, as the event will begin and end with their contributions to it: “In Web of Blood and Web of Destiny, readers are re-introduced to the Mangaverse, in a story that’s positioned as if the comics line had been published continuously for over two and a half decades in both the real world and in-universe.” But, if nothing else, Miles’ two new Marvel Mangaverse designs are fantastic entries in Spider-Man’s rich mythology.
Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1 is scheduled to be released on September 3, 2026. Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Destiny #1 is scheduled to be released on September 30, 2026.
