The real Deadpool is coming to a Marvel Studios project in 2027 after he appeared with a twist in that same franchise, though this should not be the same Merc With a Mouth that fans are likely expecting. Deadpool has become one of the most popular Marvel heroes in live-action. It is all due to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool movies at Fox and Marvel.
Up until Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey surpassed it this year, Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine stood as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with over $1.3 billion. That film marked the MCU debuts of Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, with Logan finally wearing his iconic yellow and blue costume from the X-Men comics in live-action for the first time.
Since the characters made their MCU debuts, Marvel fans have been asking for the studio to bring Deadpool and Wolverine back in new releases. At the time of writing, there are no movies confirmed to feature the heroes. That said, both Reynolds and Jackman have heavily hinted at Deadpool and Wolverine returning in Avengers: Doomsday, which releases in theaters on December 18.

While there is a solid chance that the heroes will appear in the next Avengers movie, given that Channing Tatum’s Gambit and several Fox X-Men stars are returning in the film, Deadpool is already confirmed to have another project on the way. However, that is in animated form through X-Men ’97 season 3, which will arrive on Disney+ in 2027.
Deadpool Could Be Quite Different In Marvel’s X-Men ’97 Season 3
The announcement of Deadpool’s appearance in X-Men ’97 season 3 came at New York Comic-Con 2026, where ScreenRant was in attendance. Footage from the animated series’ upcoming episodes confirmed that Deadpool will play a role in the new season, as both Wade Wilson and She-Hulk were seen among the attendees of a very special X-Men event: Gambit and Rogue’s wedding. Based on that, X-Men ’97 season 3 will mark the first time that Deadpool truly appears in the present timeline of the show. Previously, Morph changed into Deadpool for a fight sequence in the season 2 episode “Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs.”
However, that was not the real thing, just one of the many Marvel cameos that have come to X-Men ’97 through Morph’s shape-shifting powers. Before that, in the original X-Men: The Animated Series, Deadpool had also been relegated to minor cameos through visions and such flashes. Now, Deadpool will show up in the flesh in X-Men ’97 season 3. While it is true that the character’s inclusion in the new footage does not guarantee that Deadpool will have a big role in the Marvel series’ new episodes, it will be interesting to see how this new take on the character differs from Reynolds.
After all, Marvel will most likely recast Deadpool for X-Men ’97 season 3, as the project lives in its standalone universe with X-Men: The Animated Series and such, not bearing any connection to the MCU. Additionally, no MCU actors have voiced their characters in X-Men 97 to this day. While Ross Marquand is in the MCU as Red Skull, he voices Charles Xavier in X-Men ’97, two completely different roles. As such, even though She-Hulk, another fourth wall-breaking Marvel character, is also present at Gambit and Rogue’s wedding, don’t go waiting for a similar zany and quippy Deadpool as Reynolds’.
The reason for that is simple, as Marvel’s X-Men series pulls inspirations from the 90s Marvel Comics. Most of the decade, which was when Deadpool was created, had the character as a serious and ruthless mercenary. Deadpool was a killer and had no time to crack jokes. Maybe X-Men ’97 will experiment with that to see how modern audiences react. That said, Deadpool did start to shed his seriousness and become the goofier and lovable character he is today in Joe Kelly’s run starting in 1997, which so happens to connect to X-Men ’97 in a clear way, so we shall see which Deadpool emerges.
