Of all the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villains, none are as iconic as Rita Repulsa. While other antagonists like Lord Zedd may have been more powerful, Rita remains the face of evil for countless fans of the franchise. Even after more than three decades of new Power Rangers shows introducing their own memorable central villains, few have managed to match Rita’s enduring popularity. Her theatrical personality and relentless determination to destroy the Rangers have made her as synonymous with the franchise as the titular heroes.
So popular is Rita Repulsa that she was brought back as the central antagonist of the 2017 Power Rangers movie, where she was portrayed by Elizabeth Banks. She’s also appeared in various subsequent incarnations of the franchise, including Power Rangers In Space and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always. Now, in 2026, Rita has returned once again in the closest thing the franchise currently has to an official live-action show, Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz, the 2026 YouTube series made in conjunction with Playmates toys to promote the Power Rangers: Re-Ignition line of action figures.
However, while Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz brings back many familiar faces from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, it also makes some substantial changes to established franchise lore. Few characters have been changed quite as much as Rita. Not only has the iconic villain received a completely redesigned costume, but her relationship with Lord Zedd and her position within his evil empire are radically different. After 33 years, Power Rangers has effectively replaced the classic version of Rita Repulsa with a very different interpretation of the character.
The New Power Rangers Show Completely Reinvents Rita Repulsa
While Lord Zedd was technically Rita Repulsa’s superior in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the two villains often felt more like equals. Zedd initially replaced Rita as the Rangers’ primary antagonist, but she eventually returned and regained her position of power. The pair even married, establishing one of the franchise’s most memorable villainous partnerships. However, the relationship between Rita and Zedd in Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz is considerably less equal.
In the new Power Rangers series, Lord Zedd has successfully conquered Earth and established himself as its supreme ruler. Rather than being an independent villain with her own ambitions of conquering the planet, Rita has been repositioned as one of his most important subordinates. Her responsibilities are primarily political and psychological. It’s her job to maintain his control over humanity rather than personally leading the campaign against the Rangers.
This is a substantial departure from Rita Repulsa’s usual position within the narrative. Throughout her appearances in the Power Rangers franchise, including the comics, she’s generally been presented as a major antagonist in her own right. However, Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz places her within the same general hierarchy as recognizable Zedd loyalists like Goldar and Finster.
Her redesigned costume further emphasizes that this isn’t quite the Rita Repulsa longtime fans remember. She’s still an important figure within Lord Zedd’s empire of evil, but she’s no longer positioned as his equal or an independent threat. Instead, she’s become an extension of his authority in the 2026 series, making her considerably different from the character who first terrorized the Mighty Morphin Rangers in 1993.
The Rita Repulsa Changes Perfectly Fit The Ninja Kidz Power Rangers Timeline
For longtime fans of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, seeing Rita Repulsa reduced to a supporting antagonist might seem like an unnecessary change. However, it makes considerably more sense in the context of the wider story of Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz. The series isn’t simply recreating the original show. Instead, it imagines an alternate version of the MMPR timeline where Lord Zedd has already won.
Rather than repeatedly attempting to conquer Earth, the Zedd of Power Ranger x Ninja Kidz has successfully taken control of the planet. This fundamentally changes the role of his subordinates. Goldar, Finster, and Rita are no longer simply helping their master defeat the Rangers. They’re part of an established regime, tasked with maintaining Zedd’s power and ensuring humanity remains under his control.
Rita’s transformation into a political and psychological strategist makes total sense in this scenario. Her greatest strengths have always included manipulation, deception, and exploiting the weaknesses of her enemies. With Zedd already ruling Earth, these abilities are arguably more valuable than her traditional role of sending monsters to attack the Rangers. Rita’s diminished position therefore feels like a natural extension of the show’s alternate timeline rather than an arbitrary decision to sideline an iconic villain.
The new Rita Repulsa may not be the central antagonist of the 2026 Power Rangers series, but that doesn’t necessarily make her less dangerous. By transforming her into the calculating enforcer of Lord Zedd’s regime, Power Rangers x Ninja Kidz has found a different way to use one of the most recognizable villains in Power Rangers history.
