As Doctor Doom cements himself as Marvel’s central figure, the Latverian monarch debuts one of the most detailed costumes in his sixty-four-year history. Victor von Doom is one of the few Marvel villains whose classic look has remained virtually unchanged since his introduction. His silver armor, green cloak, and permanently masked face created an entire villain archetype across the comic book medium and pop culture as a whole, and it rarely undergoes significant changes in most timelines of the Marvel multiverse.
The most legendary departure from Doctor Doom’s classic aesthetic takes place in Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars, where Victor ascends to absolute omnipotence as God Emperor Doom, shedding his traditional dark metal plates and green fabrics in favor of a pristine all-white armor, paired with a matching flowing white cape. Meanwhile, Earth-928’s Doom 2099 conquers a futuristic United States clad in a cobalt-blue cybernetic suit forged from liquid adamantium and neural-linked technology. Alternate realities like the Infamous Iron Man arc saw Victor temporarily assume the heroic mantle of Tony Stark, donning a green cloack over a streamlined Iron Man suit.
Doctor Doom’s armor variations are an outward extension of his absolute arrogance and unyielding desire for universal domination. The more intricate his costume, the more obvious his vanity.
Doctor Doom Wears Updated Armor With More Medieval Inspirations
Doomquest #1; Written By Ryan North; Art By Francesco Mobili And Frank D’Armata
As the world adapts to One World Under Doom‘s aftermath and Red Hulk’s subsequent rise to power, Doomquest follows a Doctor Doom who seeks power not in the present day, but in his own past. This version of Doctor Doom sports a more intricate armor design than his usual self, with several layers of plates on top of a layer of chain mail, and large shoulder plates that include a small collar. Doom’s mask is also quite different, with much larger eyeholes and facial features that slightly resemble a snout, similarly to several of Black Panther’s masks.
Doctor Doom’s armor, cloak, and mask in Doomquest also look remarkably similar to the armor Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom wears in the villain’s only official image Marvel Studios has publicly used to market Avengers: Doomsday. Downey’s Doom mask features large eyeholes and very defined face panels, and his armor includes multiple exposed sections of chain mail, plus medieval-looking decorations across his torso and arms. While Marvel’s live-action Doctor Doom design might change in Avengers: Doomsday, Doomquest‘s Doom design seems to be synergizing with the MCU.
Doctor Doom’s Doomquest Design May Stick Around
Doom’s New Design May Synergize With His MCU Counterpart For A While
Doctor Doom’s more detailed armor and mask is highly likely to stick around as a permanent fixture in mainstream Marvel Comics, even after the ten-issue Doomquest concludes. With Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom wearing such a similar costume in Avengers: Doomsday and possibly Avengers: Secret Wars as well, it’s only logical for comic-book Doctor Doom to match the elaborate plating and the sleek armor panels worn by his MCU counterpart. Of course, Earth-616’s Doom will likely have to come back from the dead some time between the release of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday Presents Doctor Doom With An Impossible MCU Problem
Doctor Doom debuts at the peak of his power in Avengers: Doomsday, posing a unique challenge for his MCU character arc and future development.
Doomquest and the MCU’s Doctor Doom costumes provide a perfect visual template for the main Doom’s eventual return to the frontlines of the Marvel Universe. Whether directly resurrected or returning from a temporal exile at the climax of a chronal crisis, prime Doctor Doom will almost certainly emerge from the ashes sporting a permanent, battle-ready upgrade. And considering Doomquest‘s protagonist is toying with time travel, he may be the one who brings his Earth-616 counterpart back.
How similar do you think comic-book and MCU Doctor Doom will be?
