Marvel has no shortage of unique villains across its sprawling universe, but few have proven as enduring or adaptable as Loki. The God of Mischief has been a major presence in Marvel Comics for decades, evolving from one of Thor’s greatest enemies into a complicated figure whose role has shifted constantly between villain, antihero, reluctant ally, and everything in between.

Loki has made an appearance across virtually every corner of the franchise, playing major roles in countless comic storylines, becoming one of the MCU’s most beloved characters thanks to Tom Hiddleston, and appearing in animated series, video games, and numerous other Marvel projects over the years. Not many Marvel villains have been “reinvented” quite as much as Loki, though the legendary antihero always carries the same mischievous charm and wit.

However, one new Marvel story has decided we’ve had enough of Loki and his time is up, killing off the trickster and replacing him with an entirely new villain with a major axe to grind (via X).

Say goodbye to Loki in Marvel Rivals, at least temporarily, as the newest season is poised to kill him off and replace him with a brand-new villain, Gorr the God Butcher. Ahead of Season 10, Loki has been marked as “Missing” and disabled across Marvel Rivals’ casual modes, although he remains available in Competitive.

The reason became considerably clearer with the reveal of Season 10’s Butcher’s Blasphemy arc, with a cinematic depicting Gorr killing the God of Mischief with All-Black the Necrosword. It’s a clever gimmick, and weaves the game’s evolving Chronoverse storyline directly into the playable roster, even if Loki’s eventual return seems likely.

Gorr officially joins Marvel Rivals when Season 10 launches on September 11, taking on the Duelist role with a kit built around All-Black. The living Necrosword can be reshaped during combat, while Gorr is also capable of creating Black Berserkers from his enemies and rapidly repositioning around the battlefield. His arrival continues a storyline that has already seen the God Butcher turn his attention toward the divine beings of the Chronoverse, with Yggsgard and Thor now firmly in his sights.

There is much more coming beyond Gorr as well. A new Domination map, God Quarry, is scheduled for September 24, while Season 10 will also introduce new events and a “Pajama Party” costume line. NetEase is additionally making sweeping balance adjustments across the roster, including changes to Strategist Ultimate Energy generation and numerous individual hero buffs and nerfs.

Interestingly, Gorr will be the season’s only new hero. Rather than adding another character with Season 10.5, the developers are shifting resources toward the next phases of the Path to Doomsday event, including new modes inspired by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The normal two-hero seasonal schedule is expected to return with Season 11, however, but Season 10 is shaping up to be a big one for Marvel Rivals players.
