Manchester United sign highly-rated winger Thompson from Tottenham

Manchester United have completed the signing of highly rated winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham in a deal worth an initial £4 million, with a further £4 million payable in performance-related add-ons.

The 18-year-old joins Old Trafford after emerging as one of Tottenham’s brightest academy prospects and has been promised opportunities to challenge for a place in United’s first-team squad.

Thompson joined Spurs’ academy at the age of 12 and enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, scoring 13 goals and providing six assists across Under-18 and Under-21 level.

Seven of those goals came in seven UEFA Youth League appearances, while his performances also earned him two places on Tottenham’s Champions League matchday bench.

The agreement also includes a 15% sell-on clause in Tottenham’s favour, with the additional payments linked to Thompson’s achievements at first-team level for United.

Confirming the transfer, United said in a statement: “Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young winger Tynan Thompson, subject to registration. The England youth international has joined from Tottenham Hotspur.

“The 18-year-old scored 13 goals and contributed six assists last season across Under-18 and Under-21 level, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games. His performances earned him opportunities within Spurs’ first-team matchday squads.

“Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
