Arsenal are weighing up a shock approach for centre-back John Stones following his release from Manchester City.

Stones has been one of the Premier League’s best central defenders, but he is currently a free agent after his contract expired with the Cityzens on June 30.

The Englishman has been linked with a possible return to Everton, but the Gunners could provide surprise competition for the experienced ace.

Arsenal recently suffered an untimely setback as William Saliba sustained a back injury. There are fears that he could be sidelined for five months.

Manager Mikel Arteta has plenty of right-back options such as Cristian Mosquera, Jurrien Timber and Ben White, but wants another experienced back-up.

Stones has been targeted due to his contract status and it remains to be seen whether he would be tempted to join the Gunners in such a deputy capacity.

Arteta knows Stones very well from his time and he could play a key role in bringing the 32-year-old to the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer.
