The upcoming Mistborn movie is sure to be enormously satisfying, but unfortunately the best fancasting choice for Vin is no longer eligible to take the role. One of the most powerful Mistborn characters, Vin is the central figure of the franchise who learns the way of the Mistborn and their magical abilities from her mentor, Kelsier.

Brandon Sanderson’s work on adapting Mistborn is very exciting. Sanderson is one of the most beloved authors in the genre space today, and seeing him branch out into screenwriting with versions of his own works is especially promising. However the films turn out, they will certainly at least be faithful to the source material in the ways that matter.

The scope of the new film is already clear. While Mistborn takes place across multiple eras, the first movie in the series is set to adapt the novel Mistborn: The Final Empire, and will predominantly focus on Vin. The larger story concerns an immortal and oppressive Lord Ruler, whom a team of misfit rebels must come together to defeat.

Vin is considered little more than a street urchin at the time the story begins, but her journey turns into one of the best ever seen in fantasy fiction. Taking on the incredibly detailed powers of the Mistborn, Vin comes into her own as a character throughout the trilogy, and will need a strong actor to play the iconic part.

Dafne Keen Would’ve Been A Perfect Vin in Mistborn… 5 Years Ago

While The Acolyte star Dafne Keen has had her name tossed around as a popular fancasting choice for Vin, she is no longer the right age for the role.

In the novels, Vin is a very frail, underfed 15-year-old at the beginning of the story. Her physical features include dark eyes and dark hair, and her size leaves her often being viewed as defenseless and harmless. While Keen certainly looks the part to an extent, she has unfortunately aged out of the role.

Even if the character is made a little bit older for the adaptation, as tends to happen in films like these, Keen is now 21 years old. She has grown into a strong Hollywood star and is unfortunately no longer able to convincingly play a character like Vin.

Considering the film is still in the early stages, with only a first draft completed for the Mistborn script, it will be some time before cameras eventually roll on the project. With Keen already arguably too grown to play the part, she will unfortunately become even less suited to it by the time filming begins.

Who Could Play Vin In The Mistborn Movie?

Because of the young age of the character, it is difficult to predict who will eventually be cast in the role of Vin. The film may not start shooting for another year or two, and by that time, many of the names that might make sense for the part today will also have aged out of the part.

In addition, actors of the right age will be less well-known at this time. The cast of Twilight is a good comparison here, as Kristen Stewart was 17 when she was cast in the role of Bella. Before then, she was a lesser-known peformer who had appeared in projects like Panic Room and Zathura.

Assuming the film was planned to start soon, young female actors between the ages of 14 and 18 would likely be considered for the role. 17-year-old Julia Butters is a bit of a breakout star today, but might not fit the darkness needed for the role. Camp Rock 3‘s Lumi Pollack could also be looked at for the part.

Unfortunately, those ages are a period of great change, which makes looking into who might play the role in the future incredibly difficult. In all likelihood, the star of Mistborn will be a mostly unknown performer, and a bigger star will be cast as her mentor Kelsier. Other familiar names can be used to round out the cast.

Mistborn is one of the most exciting movie projects currently in development, and could be the start of an enormous franchise based on Brandon Sanderson’s larger Cosmere. Unfortunately, while Dafne Keen might have been the perfect star for the film once, she is no longer well suited to the needs of the role.
