IPL 2026 [WATCH]: Ravindra Jadeja hits back at Shardul Thakur with cheeky celebration during MI vs RR clash

The iconic Wankhede Stadium witnessed absolute high-octane drama during the 69th match of IPL 2026 as western rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) clashed on May 24. While the tournament approaches its business end, the intensity on the field is hitting boiling point. Winning the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya opted to bowl first, expecting his bowling unit to restrict the explosive RR batting lineup. What followed was a rollercoaster first innings packed with heavy hitting, tactical depth, and a classic piece of IPL theatre involving two veteran Indian all-rounders.

Ravindra Jadeja gives it back to Shardul Thakur with hilarious celebration

The absolute highlight of the first innings came down to the final over, providing fans with a viral social media moment. With Rajasthan Royals hunting for a big finish, Shardul Thakur was handed the ball for the 20th over. Facing him was RR’s tactical Impact Player, Ravindra Jadeja, who had subbed in for Shubham Dubey in the 18th over.

On the fourth delivery of the final over (19.4), Thakur bowled a slow, wide ball. Jadeja reached out and slapped it directly into the hands of the cover fielder. Believing he had picked up a massive wicket, Thakur instantly pumped his fist and flashed a triumphant smile right at Jadeja.

However, the ultimate “uno reverse” card was played just milliseconds later. The stadium siren blared through the speakers, signalling that Thakur had overstepped the bowling crease. Realizing it was a no-ball, Jadeja didn’t hold back. He turned around, aggressively pumped his fists, and roared a passionate “Come on!!!” right back at a deflated Thakur.

To compound Mumbai’s misery, the resulting Free Hit delivery was launched by Jadeja for a cracking, flat four over midwicket off a leg-stump slower ball, bringing up Rajasthan’s 200-run mark. The hilarious psychological battle perfectly encapsulated the fierce but friendly rivalry between the two national teammates.

RR put on a fighting total against MI

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Rajasthan Royals managed to piece together a highly competitive total of 205/8 in their allotted 20 overs, leaving MI with a steep chase. The Royals scoring rate remained a healthy 10.25 runs per over, largely boosted by a late-order blitz that saw them plunder 73 runs in the final five overs.

The innings started with fireworks but quickly met with a triple blow during the Powerplay. Yashasvi Jaiswal (27 off 17) and Dhruv Jurel (38 off 26) laid a solid foundation separately. However, MI’s bowlers struck back as Will Jacks removed Jaiswal, and Deepak Chahar dismissed the young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (46). Corbin Bosch also chipped in by clean-bowling Jurel.

When skipper Riyan Parag fell cheaply for 14, RR looked in temporary trouble at 119/5. Brief, aggressive cameos from Dasun Shanaka (29 off 15) and Jofra Archer (32 off 15) kept the scoreboard ticking. Ultimately, it was Jadeja’s unbeaten 19 off 11 balls alongside Nandre Burger (10*) that propelled RR past the psychological 200-run barrier.

For Mumbai Indians, Deepak Chahar (2/43) and Thakur (2/41) were the primary wicket-takers but proved expensive, leaking over 10 runs an over. Will Jacks was the most economical choice, returning figures of 1/12 in his 2 overs. MI’s batting powerhouse faces a monumental task on a batting-friendly Wankhede surface.
