Melbourne Stars have pulled off a major coup ahead of BBL|16 by signing New Zealand power-hitter Finn Allen from defending champions Perth Scorchers. The explosive opener, who played a key role in Perth’s title triumph last season, is reportedly set to earn around AU$600,000 in the first year of a three-year contract, making the move one of the most lucrative deals in Big Bash League (BBL) history.

Finn Allen’s rapid rise continues

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable period since his breakthrough BBL campaign. Allen produced a stunning unbeaten century from just 33 deliveries in the T20 World Cup semi-final, further underlining his reputation as a batter capable of changing games in a matter of overs.

His impressive performances also earned him an opportunity in the Indian Premier League, where he marked the occasion with his maiden IPL century for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Allen’s ability to dominate the powerplay and maintain an extraordinary scoring rate has made him an attractive proposition for franchise teams around the world. Melbourne Stars have now secured his services as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for their first BBL title.

Stars win bidding battle for Allen

Allen’s move comes after significant changes to the BBL contracting system. The scrapping of the overseas player draft removed the mechanism that had previously given Perth Scorchers an avenue to retain the New Zealand batter.

With additional salary-cap flexibility also becoming available to several clubs under the revised rules, competition for Allen’s signature intensified.

Perth reportedly made an effort to keep their title-winning star but were ultimately outbid by Melbourne Stars. The Stars are understood to have agreed to a deal worth around AU$600,000 for the first year, with Allen signing a three-year contract. That figure would place the deal among the biggest in BBL history and represents a major investment from the Melbourne-based franchise.

Familiar connections could help Allen settle

There are already several links between Allen and the Stars setup that could make his transition smoother. The New Zealand opener has spent the past two seasons playing Major League Cricket for the San Francisco Unicorns, whose operations are connected to Cricket Victoria’s high-performance program. Cricket Victoria also oversees the Melbourne Stars.

Adding another familiar face is Stars head coach Cameron White, who has coached Allen during his time with the Unicorns. The combination of those existing relationships could help Allen quickly adapt to his new surroundings and the expectations that come with being one of the league’s marquee players.
