Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter turned broadcaster Deep Dasgupta has offered an insightful perspective on Team India‘s ongoing T20 International journey, highlighting that while the team’s depth is unmatched, settling on a definitive combination remains a complex task. Despite fluctuating performances in white-ball cricket over recent series, Dasgupta remains bullish about the talent pool available to national selectors as India prepares for upcoming bilateral fixtures and major international tournaments.
Deep Dasgupta applauds Team India even as T20I form remains inconsistent
Following a high-tempo phase in white-ball cricket where India lifted the T20 World Cup before experiencing unexpected setbacks, including back-to-back series losses against Ireland and England, followed by a dominant sweep of Zimbabwe, questions surrounding the squad’s consistency have naturally emerged. However, Dasgupta believes these results do not paint the complete picture of India’s overall strength.
Addressing fans on his YouTube channel, Dasgupta acknowledged that while viewers might find the claim surprising, India currently possesses enough elite talent to field two entirely separate national XI teams without compromising on quality.
“In the next one and a half years, the most important thing in the format will be to figure out what the combination is, and roughly speaking, what the best 15 is? At this time, if I say this, people might laugh at me, but factually we can make two teams, and chances will be that both teams will be equally good,” Dasgupta pointed out.
He stressed that the recent hiccups during the series against England and Ireland were largely structural rather than talent-based. In his view, continuous rotation and testing young players, such as opener Abhishek Sharma, who has faced recent tactical setups from opposition bowlers, are part of a necessary transition period rather than a crisis of skill.
Narrowing down thirty players to fifteen remains India’s biggest challenge
With a rich talent pipeline fed by domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League, Team India’s management faces a unique dilemma: an abundance of viable options. The core challenge over the next 18 months isn’t discovering match-winners, but whittling a broader pool of 30 top-tier candidates down to a cohesive 15-man squad.
Dasgupta emphasized that identifying the ideal tactical balance remains an evolving process for the coaching staff and selectors.
“I don’t think anything has changed, and I feel that this team is a work in progress. Several people have asked me what is going on with the Indian team? I tell them that most of the time, in white-ball formats, especially T20Is, we don’t know what the best playing XI is, or even the best 15. We don’t know what combination suits us best,” he explained.
As the Men in Blue prepare for their upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies at home, establishing role clarity will take center stage. With intense competition across every role, from explosive top-order batters to versatile all-rounders, India’s primary focus will be finalizing a settle core capable of delivering consistent success on the international stage.
